Forsaken Realms, The Hunt Is On!

It's release day for Forsaken Realms! This is my first book release in 15 months. It feels like forever. I'm super nervous but delighted to be sharing stories with my friends and readers again.

Blurb: Forsaken Realms:
On The Run, Bounty Hunters.
“Retrieval specialist” is a fancy term for high-level corporate bounty hunting and Agent Gemmina Nayar is the best in her league. She’s a sense-enhanced, level-seven bounty hunter from New Mumbai who receives an exclusive invitation to track a dangerous criminal on private property. She arrives on the tropical planetoid eager to hunt and release her inner tigress, but is disappointed to discover the bounty has already been captured.
Syan is a Kironian, an off-limits alien race. He’s gorgeous, rugged and all male. Even sedated and forced to wear an electronic silence collar, he resembles a coppery skinned refugee from Mount Olympus. Gemmina’s unaware Kironian saliva is loaded with pheromones that can turn even the most indifferent woman into a willing mate. A single kiss or bite is sabotage.

When the mission turns lethal, she realizes she’s not only been tricked into bringing the wrong man to justice, but the harsh jungle below is a calculated trap.

Excerpt: (After a crash landing, Syan and Gemmina are cutting a path through the jungle)

Syan stepped ahead of her and swung his powerful arm in an arc making the virtual blade glow white-hot. Soon he hacked a tunnel through what had looked like an impassable wall of brush. A virtual blade did some of the work, but it responded directly to the effort expended. His arm never seemed to tire. The task was exhausting to watch, and she knew it must be taking a toll on his already spent reserves. They walked a long way, fighting their way through jungle. The heat wore on her. “You haven’t seen anymore of that bava vine have you?”
The machete stilled; he turned. “It’s everywhere. Would you like to stop and rest? I sensed you were tired but also knew that if I said anything you would be defensive.”
Gemmina knew he was right. “I do need to rest, but only for a few minutes.”
A big smile warmed his face. “I need to rest, too.” He walked toward a yellowish vine, sliced a long portion of it off, and brought it to her.
She accepted the juicy vine with a smile. “Thanks.”
“I like doing things for you.” Syan turned away from her and yanked the top half of his body hugging pressure suit over his head, revealing a flawless wedge-shaped torso rippling with muscle. “The day is hot.” With his back turned he tossed the discarded shirt near the packs and cut another bava vine, drinking several sections dry before glancing over his shoulder. “Do you want more?”
“Yes.”
He hacked another chunk of bava away, then faced her.
A gasp of awe escaped her. His coppery chest was smooth, no body hair, and heavily tattooed from shoulder to shoulder in an intricately wrought triangle of geometric patterns that glowed emerald green.
“You are staring.” He handed her the section of vine. “I have heard men of Earth mark their skin as well.”
“They do.” She could barely trust herself to speak, and it was all she could do not to reach out and touch the solid curves of his lean torso.
“You may touch.” With care, he took hold of her hand, which was slightly sticky with bava juice, and brought it to his chest.
His skin felt hot beneath her palm. The tattoos had a faint almost phosphorescent quality. She scanned the beautiful designs noticing they were not simple abstract designs as she had first thought. On closer inspection she saw what appeared to be stylized birds of prey and stalking cat-like creatures hidden in the dense line work. “What do these marks mean?”
He crouched lower bringing himself to eye level with her. “I’m glad you asked.” Without releasing her hand he traced her fingertips across his skin until they hovered near the cat-like creature. “This is a picture representation of my name. It was my father’s name as well. On Kiron a, syan is the largest hunter in the jungle. It is twice the size of the biggest man. On Earth I believe you have a similar creature called a tiger.”
“Yes, I see that now.” Her gaze flickered between the tattoo and Syan’s shining black eyes, which tipped upward ever so slightly at the corners.
“Young men must earn each mark by doing brave things and passing many tests.” He traced a faint triangle in the air, moving his finger from shoulder to shoulder and then to a point above his navel. “This area on a man’s torso is called a, shambu or chevron. It takes a man many years to fill in. Recently I received my last mark on my twenty-eighth birthday. Now my shambu is complete.”
His face beamed with pride, which she took note of. “Does that indicate something special?”
“It means I am eligible to claim a life mate.”
Dear God, it was getting hard to breathe. “Oh.”
He moved closer. “You are the first woman to see my completed shambu.”
Her heart raced. “I’m honored.”
“On Kiron showing a woman your shambu is not a casual thing. It’s very personal.”
“Then why did you do it?”
His lips parted, and he appeared to be breathlessly waiting for her to say more.
She sensed he was considering asking for her permission to touch.
“Gemmina....”
This was no time to think or get caught in reason. Purely on instinct, she cupped the sides of his face, pulled him close, and kissed his beautiful mouth. There was no resistance, only thrilling heat. His lips were soft and carried the faintest hint of sweet bava. Immediately he tangled his fingers in her hair, drew her close, and held her captive against his chest. The kiss deepened into a warm, intimate meld. A heart pounding sense of intoxication rose as she glided her tongue across his. Her thigh brushed against his. She wanted him to topple her to the ground and lie with her so badly it hurt...

Excerpt: (Following a horrific shuttle crash)
Gemmina woke with a groan. Everything hurt, and she was inexplicitly soaked to the skin. Her long black hair had unfurled from its braid, and the wet strands clung to her face. Her eyelids flickered open and immediately shut as blinding bright sunlight made her head pound. Her forehead ached as if a thunderstorm brewed inside her skull. There was also someone solid and warm locked against her.
With effort she lifted her head, glanced over her shoulder and saw Syan. His eyes were closed, and his chest rose and fell with each deep breath. Her first concern was that he was unconscious. He could have been injured or perhaps he simply collapsed in exhaustion. She couldn’t tell which.
“You can let go now.” She tried to pry herself loose from his grip, but couldn’t. He was sound asleep, but held tight. For a moment she studied his face, the lush arc of his lips, the chevron of his heavy black brows. It was impossible to look at him and not notice he was an especially gorgeous man. She tapped his chest.
“Wake up.” Her voice sounded hoarse.
Syan opened his eyes and smiled at her, making tiny lines at the corners fan. “You’re alive.” He spoke the words aloud. His accent was exotic and voice rich. “For a short while I wasn’t sure.”
The silence collar had been removed. A red gash had opened on the side of his neck where the collar had been.
“You tore the collar off? How?”
“I don’t want to be treated like a captured animal. It took persistence but I snapped it off.” As proof of his tenacity he held out his hands displaying the raw grooves that the collar had gouged into his fingers.
“I’ve never seen anyone do that. You are determined. What happened to us?”
“Your ship broke apart in high orbit.”
“I remember that. I mean after.”
“You were knocked unconscious. I grabbed hold of you, dragged you toward the hatch, and jumped.”
“You held onto me during a jump? That was chancy. We might have tangled lines.”
He brushed a gentle hand against her shoulder. “It’s a good thing I held on. The chutes did not open automatically.”
“Your chute didn’t open?”
“Yours didn’t.”
“What?”
“I had to hold onto to you, and it was a fast, hard drop.”
Cautiously she explored her aching ribs with a series of light finger taps. “I think I’m going to have some colorful souvenir bruises.”
“Did I hurt you? I’m sorry. I might have squeezed too hard. I was so scared I might drop you.”

5-Day Countdown To Forsaken Realms!

I can't believe it! A story I contracted a year ago, is ready to debut.  Forsaken Realms is part of Fated Desires On The Run, Special Lines. This is the first book in my futuristic Bounty Hunters United series. Do you like a touch of danger in your men and crave the thrill of the chase? Forsaken Realms is already getting great reviews. I hope readers will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Forsaken Realms Releases January 13th Pre-order now!

Here's an Excerpt:

Gemmina faced the open bay doors of the complex. Shouts and several loud howls rang from within.
The guard mumbled into the communicator. “What’s going on in there? Ms. Nayar is waiting to collect the retrieval.”
A frantic response burst from the device. “He ripped the second silence collar off! We’re replacing it now.”
The guard appeared visibly shaken. “The collar’s made of carbon compound. How did he do that? This is not good. Obviously, we can’t count on the collar. Don’t you have him sedated?”
“The sedation burns through him. We’ve given him enough to knock a rhino down.”
“Then try something stronger.” The guard scowled.
A burst of static buzzed from the communicator. “Kironian physiognomy is tricky shit. This guy’s a puzzle. There’s something weird going on with his blood. He keeps adapting to whatever sedation we give him.”
The guard glanced up. His eyes widened when he realized she had heard the conversation. “I have Ms. Nayar right beside me. I advise we use force cuffs on the subject, even if they violate intergalactic ethics protocols. They work. Treat the sedation as back up.”
“Gotcha.”
“Force cuffs?” A wave of disgust curled her lips. “Really? Are we living in the Dark Ages? Not that I feel a great deal of pity for a psychopath who nuked innocent people, but it looks bad on my side. The cuffs are notorious for causing nerve and tissue damage, and they’re considered cruel and unusual. I’ve never had to use them to get a retrieval under control.”
“Once you’re out of Naveen’s orbit you’re free to do things your way, but I advise you to not let your guard down with this guy.”
A shiver of apprehension gripped her. What the hell had she gotten herself into? Considering she had extensive experience with many humanoid species, she should have felt confident in her abilities. But she didn't know exactly what a Kironian was.
“Listen, guys, even with access to a warp tunnel for part of the journey, Penal Colony X57 is eighty flight hours away. I cannot leave a man in force cuffs that long. Add to that the fact he’s Kironian and under political sequester and none of us are legally authorized to punish or even interact with this species. I see a perfect recipe for disaster. I don’t want to harm him and cause an intergalactic incident. What are we talking about here? How humanoid is a Kironian?”
“Very human.” The guard was quick to answer. “But better—smarter, and stronger. Most are peace-loving except for this character, who seems to be something of a rogue. I’ll bet the Kironians will cheer when they discover we took him out of the equation.”
Four guards wearing head-to-toe body armor and face shields, and carrying ionized bang sticks with the tips glowing hot, marched toward her, dragging a semi-conscious man between them. The captive was slumped forward with head hanging and a tousle of dark, wavy hair concealing his face. His splayed legs hung limp, and the toes of his heavy boots dug deep furrows into the beach. The current sedation seemed to be effective…”

Sheila's Reads gave Forsaken Realms 5 STARS
"Bounty hunter Gemmina Nayar is called to recluse millionaire Jason Naveen's lab/planet to pick up fugitive Syan and deliver him to X57 Penal Colony. She takes custody of him but learns that not everything is on the up-and-up. Now what does she do?

I liked this story. At first it is somber but then it picks up with Katalina Leon's sly brand of humor. This was not a laugh out loud read but one where I smiled and chuckled to myself often as I could imagine Gemmina and Syan interplay very vividly. She's headstrong and willful but will listen when things are not right. He is patient but equally stubborn when he feels he is right. They made a good team. The villain is hiss worthy. The world building is good, and sometimes, scary.

I look forward to more of Katalina Leon.

Happy New Year!

They say that time flies on the wings of angels...
But too often we try to hold onto time by chaining it to our fears and hopes. We tend to try to control it, fearing where it will take us. But fear of a thing makes us unhappy. It traps us in our own worries and doubts. I think that we must let our fears and doubts go, and release our chains.  We can fear time, or we can allow it to take us places we have never flown. Places where we have never dreamed of going. Let our minds fly...let our souls soar...and let our fears go.

This New Year will be my first without my daughter. But I can feel her in everything I do. I can see her in everything I love. I can hear her in the wind...the calls of birds...the sound of waves. She will never be forgotten.

So I am writing again. I am hoping again.  I am letting my fears go. I am holding my head high. I pray that my friends and fans may all experience the new year with a sense of hope and charity in their hearts, and a will to move forward with energy and care for the world.

God bless you all...May the chains of fear be broken, and the wings of love fly you wherever you wish to be.

Bring on the Balance

The new year has been on my mind; the actual number 2-0-1-5. Something about it resonates with me so I performed the tiniest bit of research.

The year 2015 is an 8 Universal Year in Numerology. The number 8 is considered the number of money and power, which is true, to some extent. However, the essence of the 8, first and foremost, is balance. (Like all symbols, including letters and numbers, its shape tells you much about its nature -- the 8 stays upright only when it is in balance.)…

There was a very interesting article regarding how global economics, political unrest, worldwide social intolerance and other vitally important issues may begin to be brought into balance this year - powerful, positive and thought provoking stuff.

Balance to me means calm, peace, contentment. Pretty darn fine things to hope for and to work towards!!

Happy New Year!
