Giving Thanks!

With Thanksgiving only a few days away I wanted to take a few moments to give thanks to those who have touched my life over the last year.
To my husband, who stood by me through an excruciating year. We had our ups and downs but his unwavering love pulled me through a very dark period of my life. For those who never experienced postpartum depression, count yourself lucky…for those who have, you have my sympathy. After giving birth to five children I suffered my first and last bout with the disease with this last child. It is one of the most horrifying experiences. My thoughts were not my own. I became a stranger in my own skin. Someone I did not like, so I can only image what my husband felt.
To my writing partner, another rock in my life. Without Katalina I’d be a mess. She helped me through those ups and downs too. Her encouragement of my writing during that time was another reason I came out of the darkness. When she suggested we write a series she didn’t realize the task we were taking on, but it kept my mind off of the ugly and focused on something good.
To all the new friends I’ve made over the last year and the readers who support my writing career. It’s not a career for the faint of heart, so to the handful of people buying my books THANK YOU! :o)
I’d also like to thank Julia and Tessie. Your emails here and there just to say congrats or how are you really brighten my day. I’m blessed to have wonderful friends in this community.
I can't forget my writer friend Marie Rose Dufour. She sought me out online two years ago and I'm so glad she did. We share many common bonds and I'm glad to have a good friend in this small state. I'm also so happy for her writing career taking off.
Lastly I’m thankful for my job. It might be the cause of my current health issues, but I have a great team of doctors who will get the Crohns under control and the stress of the day job will pass. There are too many people without work, so believe me I’m thankful to have an income.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Ack! Bam! Crash! Another Friday!

So, coming very soon, Is It Spicy?

No, not romance, but a great title for erotica, don't you think? It's a fun short story.

More as soon as I have the time, which is also in 'short' supply right now.

I'm getting better and finding and using covers from internet freebies - remember ladies, it takes time to find exactly what you want and you might have to do some cutting. Definitely a learning process but well worth the effort.

Have a wonderful weekend! Julia

Gol durn dang it!

What is it with me? I cannot remember to post on Fridays and blogger hates me so much it won't let me schedule posts!

I think the problem is that hubby works from home every Friday, which is a mixed blessing. Yes, he hikes with me early in the morning, like at the crack of dawn so he can get to work by 8 a.m. But he's here all day, using my space and asking for things like...coffee, lunch, afternoon delight...you know, gotta take the bitter with the sweet, I guess - but he throws off my timetable!

So, what's new? I have the two indie books up on Amazon, working on getting a third book up within the next few weeks. I'm working on In the Flesh - a sequel to Incorporeal.

Many thanks for all your kind words earlier this week - I needed them desperately. Have a wonderful weekend! love, Julia

Daughters of Persephone - First Review

From Happily Ever After - 4 Teacups

LynnMarie’s Review

I’ve read other books by Julia Barrett, so I was eager to start Daughters of Persephone. I commend Ms. Barrett for the time and devotion in creating a realistic sci-fi world with its own terms and rules. You are pulled into the realism of a new world and kept there by the larger than life characters.

In book one, we meet Aja and Kyr. Their romance is sweet and humorous, both knowing they’d found their mate from their first encounter. Aja is a daughter of The Blood, a race of women developed long ago on Earth and since descended from Persephone. They have unique abilities and can defeat a male with their eyes closed. Kyr is captain and responsible for Aja’s safe delivery in a time of political unrest.

In book two, Aja’s sister, Ennat, and Kyr’s brother, Karna are the focus. Ennat has the same mahogany hair and grey eyes of her sister, but she’s stronger, ready to fight and kill whenever necessary. Her relationship with Karna is sexy and playful. They challenge each other, but can’t deny their desire. Once they take the step to join their blood, their fate is sealed, joining them together forever.

There is a lot of politics in this book which can be a bit heavy at times. However, the dialogue, humor and developing romances keep the reader’s interest. The entire book was consistent and followed the rules created by the author early on in the book. The two Daughters of Persephone are ready to take on their evil father in hopes to bring peace and stability to the world. We learn a little of a third sister, but only meet her briefly. Each woman would easily give up their lives for their cause, or for their mates.

If you enjoy a complex and engaging sci-fi read with kick-ass heroines and steamy romance, escape into Julia Barrett’s new world in Daughters of Persephone.

5 Delightful Divas for Beauty and the Feast

From Stacey at Dark Diva Reviews ~5 Delightful Divas for
Beauty and the Feast:
Stacey’s Review:
“Eva is a chef that loves her job. She takes pride in the food she makes and it shows. There are a lot of food and meal preparation descriptions, but rather than bore us, they stimulates our senses…and makes us hungry. At the end of the book, there are recipes and quick facts about the meals Eva makes in the book, which was a nice touch.

Eva is hired to prepare a romantic dinner for two for Gabriel Abbott and a date. When she discusses the meal plan on the phone with him, she falls for his sexy voice, just as he does for hers. Later, when they meet by accident, there is perfect chemistry between them and nothing is ever the same.
One of the biggest hurdles facing them is the fact that Eva is a simple country girl and Gabriel is wealthy and educated. Can their two worlds blend enough for them to have a life together? Can Eva trust Gabe, even though he has a past reputation as a playboy?

This book was great with many layers. Julia Barrett created characters so real that I could read about their daily activities all day and enjoy every minute of it. Not only the main characters, but the complimentary cast of secondary characters as well.

I found around the middle, I began to wonder where this book was going. Then a spiteful ex-girlfriend comes into the picture and creates all kinds of problems for our lovers and plenty of suspense for the reader!

If you enjoy a classic romance with a dose of suspense to keep you anxious, then give Beauty and the Feast a read. The sex was hot and the last scene of the book was just perfect and kept me smiling long after I closed the book. Julia Barrett is a talented author that can pull you out of reality with her writing. I look forward to her next release.”

"Captured" is captivating.

Captured
by Julia Barrett

Hello everyone! To get 2010 off to a sizzling hot start I am proud to announce Julia Barret’s new release from Siren Press- “Captured.”

The blurb speaks for itself.

“Mari never expects to find herself caged in a cargo hold on a spaceship. She learns from her captors she's headed to the meat market. When they try to return her to stasis, she resists. The male in charge, Ekkatt, allows her to remain awake. Mari realizes her survival depends upon connecting with Ekkatt. She must make him see her as a sentient being or she will end up dinner.

Ekkatt has never spoken to any human. Humans are beasts. They are valued for one thing, the money they bring at auction. The Attun are vegetarians, but other species prize human flesh and Ekkatt makes good money trapping. Then the female with red hair awakens. She speaks to him and forces him to admit she has a name. Mari throws Ekkatt's entire life into question, the biggest question... Can he watch her sold to the highest bidder?”

KL: What makes your hero so sexy?

JB: First of all, pardon my French, but Ekkatt is just fucking sexy! He's other, a man from another world. He's big, he's strong, he's courageous, and he's honorable yet conflicted. All his life he's been taught to think of humans as insentient beings, been told they have no souls. On his world, harboring a human or participating in any relationship with a human is punishable by death, yet he risks everything to save one human woman who has forced him to see her as his equal. He finds himself willing to do whatever he has to do to keep her alive

KL: What's is Mari’s biggest challenge to trusting him?

JB: Simple. Ekkatt is her kidnapper. He's stolen Mari from Earth, along with a cargo hold full of other women, in order to drop her at a warehouse on his planet where she will be auctioned off at the meat market. This is how he earns his living. He's a tracker and a trapper. Mari doesn't trust Ekkatt, but she believes her only chance of survival is to somehow get under his skin, to communicate with him and make him see her as a conscious being instead of an animal. She forces him to acknowledge that she has a name and she is not livestock to be sold to the highest bidder.

KL: Tell me your favorite thing about this story.

JB: For me, the most beautiful and the sexiest thing about the story is the trust and the respect that grows between two people from quite literally different worlds. They are both filled with guilt. Ekkatt because of the life he's led prior to meeting Mari and because of the fact that he took her in the first place. Mari because she has attached herself to her captor in order to stay alive. The hero suffers great remorse and the heroine suffers from survivor guilt. Both manage to come to terms with what they've done and what they haven't done and they fall in love

KL: I know you love Sci-fi and this is your first book in this genre. Who are your greatest influences in the Sci-fi genre?

JB: My current favorite science fiction writer is George R.R. Martin and his series, A Game of Thrones - it's very intense, loaded with complex characters and multiple storylines. So many authors have influenced me - Robert Heinlen with his classic, Stranger in a Strange Land, Larry Niven, the author of Ring World. Frank Herbert and Dune. Ursula LeGuin and The Left Hand of Darkness. I love Tad Williams, author of The Dragonbone Chair series and I adore Anne McCaffrey and her Pern books. I'm a huge Battlestar Galactica and Firefly/Serenity fan. Plus I love the original StarTrek and I'm a big fan of the Borg! I'm not a huge fan of sci fi on film because my standards are high, but The Terminator nailed time travel and I thought Avatar was pretty amazing - both films were written and directed by James Cameron.

KL: Tell me a bit about the dream that inspired “Captured.”

JB: Ah...the dream that wrote the book. Well, here's the true story that precedes the dream. When I was seventeen, I lived in Israel for a year. I worked in the l'ul, the chicken farm, on a kibbutz. On Shabbat, on Saturdays, only two of us worked and we took turns. On my Saturday, I overslept. Instead of getting up at 4:30 a.m., I woke up at 7, and I freaked out because the guy I was scheduled to work with was eighty-four years old! I threw on my clothes, rushed over to the chicken coops and began collecting eggs at the opposite end of the l'ul. That was the last thing I remember until the moment I found myself standing outside the twelfth house, with Noodleman, the older man, asking me how in the hell I collected twelve houses in an hour. I had no idea. I looked around and I had collected all the eggs, stacked them neatly in the cart, and I had absolutely no memory of what had happened in that hour. I didn't even remember spacing out or daydreaming. Nothing. I drew a complete blank. My memory of that day is still vivid and so is that one hour hole in my memory. Around the kibbutz, this became known as the Miracle of the Eggs. Normally, it would take at least six hours to collect that many eggs.

Last August, I dreamed the story of Mari and Ekkatt from start to finish - it was apparently my subconscious' version of what happened to me during that lost hour. Mari is kidnapped while she is collecting eggs from her sister's chicken coop. I could not get their story out of my head, so I stopped the book I was working on and wrote nonstop. Three weeks later, with minimal editing, I sent it off to Siren and as they say, the rest is history!

KL: I wish my workday went that easily. “Captured” is one hot, exciting story and Seven Sexy Scribes is going to post an excerpt of “Captured” on Friday. Trust me, you don’t want to miss it!

There is Superstition...

I admit it.

Superstition is my middle name. Yes. Julia Rachel Superstition Barrett. I won't walk under a ladder. I toss extra salt over my left shoulder. I knock wood. God forbid my husband should say something nice about the car because the minute he says, "Man, this car sure is running well..." Bam! The thing will throw a rod at 75mph on the freeway...in the mountains...at night...when it's 20 below. Been there, done that. Don't want to attract the evil eye!

My left sock goes on first and then my right sock. Then my left shoe and then my right shoe. If I'm tired or out of sorts and I accidentally put on the right shoe first, off it comes and on goes the left shoe. It just feels wrong. Obsessive/Compulsive much? Me?

On the other hand, black cats? No worries. The original warning about black cats - two of which live with me by the way, came from the days when certain groups of people thought cats to be familiars of witches or the devil and it was gray cats, not black cats.

Friday the 13th? Never bothers me. I was born on a Friday the 13th at five minutes to midnight and the obstetrician told my mother that if she was superstitious he'd write it on the birth certificate as five minutes after midnight - on the 14th. She said, nah. The 13th will always be good luck. So far so good. No one knows the true origins of the unlucky reputation of the number 13, but I suspect it has to do with a more pagan tradition of 13 lunar cycles during the year as opposed to the 12 months of the solar calendar.

What about you? You have a lucky day or number or charm?

The Joys and Benefits of Polar Tanning!

Yeah, That's Me!

So I've recently discovered the joy of polar tanning, i.e., lying naked in the sun in my backyard. It's easy for me, our property is rimmed by tall trees and shrubs and no one can see in unless they want to climb a ladder and risk breaking something. I do it for two reasons - all this hiking gives me a major uneven farmer's tan - arms, lower legs and neck. By gosh, I want an even tan! Second - everyone can use a little more Vitamin D - the new super vitamin! It's especially hard to absorb enough sunlight to manufacture enough Vitamin D in the winter.

So on sunny days, I head out around noon with my bathrobe on, spread out two towels and toss down a pillow and hit the pavement for my polar tan. Eight minutes on each side and I'm done - you need the equivalent of fifteen minutes of full sun exposure each day to increase your body's Vitamin D level.

It feels dang good! Go for it, ladies!

The Artist

Book one of the Dream series

By Julia Barrett

My husband called this morning to tell me he’d changed his flight and we had a huge argument. It was about his family and how they suck. He didn’t try to defend them, but neither did he stand up to them and I thought… Jeez, you fucker, you just cut off your own balls to spite your face. How am I supposed to have sex with you ever again when you’ve just emasculated yourself in my eyes?! You stupid fuck.

I drove to the damn Oakland Airport later that same day, navigating on freeways I’m not familiar with through heavy traffic, holding my MapQuest directions in one hand, trying to steer with the other hand, watching the road with one eye and reading with the other… fuming.

Of course, we made up on the ride home. After I calmed down and put on my listening ears, I found out that he’d tried to defend me but his jerk of a brother had drawn a line in the sand and wouldn’t relent, so my husband decided retreat was the better part of valor. He realized he was fighting a battle he couldn’t win and he walked away. He’s not like me. He’s conciliatory. I’d just as soon beat his brother about the head with a rolling pin, and that’s me being nice. I have a bit of a red-head temper. Just a bit…

* * * *

Last night, my husband came to bed after I’d already fallen asleep and I woke with his teeth biting down on my nipple and his cock pressed against my thigh. Oh. My. God. Was he hard. Like… explosively hard. He’s always big—I’m a very lucky woman—but holy shit! He was a bloody rock. Maybe it was the argument about his family, or maybe it was the fact that he’d been out of town for ten days, could have been either, but I was slippery wet in seconds. He tossed me onto my back and rolled on top of me, spreading my legs with his knees and ooh that first thrust… he was so hard, so big, he couldn’t get in right away—that’s my favorite part of sex, feeling him press against me, intruding into my space inch by glorious inch, while I open for him, you know, give it up.

Once he was in me, once he was buried to the hilt, as they say in romance novels, he began to move, not like a jackhammer, but with slow, sensuous thrusts, pulling nearly all the way out and then rubbing against me as he plunged in over and over and over again, his lips on mine, his hand on my breast, his thumb rubbing my nipple until I found myself breathless and whimpering and crying Yes, Yes, Yes, Oh God, Yes. Oh Yes. And we both managed to come simultaneously. We seem to do that a lot. I’m not sure why, but I think it has something to do with the fact that we are each very attuned to the state of arousal in the other. His thrusts grow harder, deeper and he feels as if he’s expanding inside me and I guess my noises, as he calls them, which he says excite him, give me away. Oh yes, they do indeed. When it comes to sex, I am an open book. Make up sex, mad sex, get even sex, love you sex—it’s all there, plain as the nose on my face.

And the dream sex. I have to count the dream sex, like last night’s episode.

I did fall asleep quickly, sated, and I do mean sated. Toward morning, I dreamed a dream. It was less like a dream and more like a visitation. Something happens every so often… men come in the night, in my dreams. No two are alike, they do different things, say different things, they don’t look alike. One… and he’s come a number of times… is a vampire. I don’t know them, but I want them and in my dreams, I always fuck them… well, one time the vampire bit me but it was as good as fucking. My orgasm on that occasion was out of this world.

In this particular dream, the guy came to me as a blond. In real life, I’m not attracted to blonds, other than Brad Pitt, especially the Brad Pitt of A River Runs Through It. In the dream I found myself at an art exhibit. I didn’t know the artist and I didn’t know why I was there, but some organization was apparently honoring the man. He stood on a stage in front of a large crowd, and accepted some award. I watched from the very back, knowing this was a dream and wondering why it was necessary for me to be present.

Chairs had been set up in rows and someone had arranged for a media presentation. A screen dropped down from the ceiling and everyone took a seat to watch… what? The story of the artist’s life and work? A photo essay of his paintings? I wasn’t quite sure. I remained in the back by myself, and found a seat on a couch that had been pushed against the far wall. I guess the organizers wanted to get it out of the way.

The lights went down and everyone’s attention focused on the screen. I wore a short jean skirt and a tight black sweater. My skirt hitched up when I sat, so for the sake of discretion, I covered my thighs with my leather jacket. From out of nowhere, the artist stood in front of me and he asked if he could sit beside me.

“Of course,” I murmured, scooting over to make room for him. The man was good looking in an older, distinguished, masculine kind of way, not my usual type, but… who cares… it was a dream, right?

Before I had time to protest, he’d reached down and grabbed my legs and pulled them across his lap, forcing me to recline sideways on the couch. I must admit I felt some surprise, but I decided to go with it, curious to learn what he had in mind. He kept my jacket over my thighs, but I felt his hands move beneath the leather and he shoved my skirt up to my waist. Should I protest, I wondered, already wet with anticipation. No. This is a dream, I reminded myself. I can do whatever I want in dreams.

Scary Bites!

Real Life Ghost Stories

Remember the movie The Sixth Sense? That was me. When my mom saw the film, she called me and said, Wow, now I understand! I was that kid hiding in a closet surrounded by my toy horses, my fingers in my ears to shut out the voices of the hovering spirits. I was the little Jewish girl on my knees in every Catholic church, covering myself with holy water and genuflecting in the hopes it would keep the ghosts away. But they kept coming and they scared me nearly to death! Of course they didn't look like they did in movie. Ghosts look like they did in life, unless they are quite distressed and then they are kind of a ball of chaotic energy.

Took me years to come to terms with the fact that I see and hear ghosts. They come for a reason - because they have unfinished business that they want me to finish. I generally refuse. It's not that I'm not sympathetic, it's just that...well...exactly how would you approach a complete stranger and say...uh...I just spoke with your dead brother and uh... I can't bring myself to do it. I have only passed on messages on those occasions when I knew I could make a difference and the person I was asked to contact wouldn't be likely to call the police.

Over the years, I've lived in three haunted houses - one in Iowa, two in Utah - that darn Utah - and met some pretty interesting spirits out here in Cali. My favorite is this very handsome Native American man I see when I hike. I see him on one particular trail in one particular place. He's caught in time, stalking a deer, just beyond a pile of fallen rock. He always appears in the autumn, just before the rains begin. I stand still and watch him. He's bent over, walking silent as a big cat, all his attention focused on whatever is ahead of him. His chest is bare, he wears deerskin leggings and moccasins. His hair is long and braided and tied with a deerskin thong. I wish he could see and hear me, but he can't, so my dog and I stand and watch until he vanishes into thin air. Oh yeah, my dog can see him too. Nothing stirs with his passing aside from my heart. It's such a poignant moment and I wonder why he's stranded there, in the midst of this one act. Did he die that day? Or is this simply a reflection of what was? Perhaps one day, if only in a story, he'll stop and turn and see me. And I'll know the answer.

The Romance Studio

A Five-Heart Review

I received a nice review from The Romance Studio for My Everything. The book is no longer available with Cerridwen Press, but I'm hoping for a re-release soon! Thanks Dee! Here's the review:

Two years ago Benjamin McCall disappeared to heal the wounds left when his wife was blown up in a car bombing. Wrong place at the wrong time? Not exactly. He had taken her into a dangerous situation to keep her and their unborn child safe. Still grieving, he's called back to the States by an urgent message from his best friend and runs into Grace Rafael, the woman he fell in love with ten years ago. Now he has to protect another woman from someone who will use everyone he cares about in his effort to see Ben dead.

Julia Barrett weaves a tale that twists and turns the way a good suspense should. The main characters have to deal with the grief and pain of their own personal lives while trying to protect those they love. Both Ben and Grace have lost spouses they loved dearly. The author does an exceptional job with crafting the romance between them without demeaning what they had with their spouses before. This is a wonderful work that balances the past and the future, giving respect to both.

Wonderful characters who have realistic conversations and relationships fill the pages. Both genders have their heroic moments and their human frailties. This is one of those books that keeps the suspense building while still giving us those moments when we can just smile at the totality of real people Ms. Barrett puts into her players. This story builds the lives of the people and families involved in the storyline well to show us what they're made of. This author is one to keep on that list when we're looking for a great book to read.

Overall rating:
Sensuality rating: Very sensual

The Rains Have Returned

My Favorite Time of Year...
Optimal for Writing!

Every year I wait for the rains, because once the rains stop in California, you can be pretty certain they won't begin again for six months....So basically, you have six months of glorious weather. Sometimes it becomes a bit too glorious because who wants to sit still when the birds are singing, the sun is shining and there are any number of amazing places to visit, sit, drink an espresso, hike, bike, ride....
To me, the rains are life-giving, rejuvenating, invigorating. Just like the re-emergence of the sun, once they start, they don't really stop for six months and I hope that's the case this year because last year, the rains were late and ended early and we've suffered through a drought this summer.

Such is weather. I'm a big fan of weather. When I lived in the Midwest, it was tornadoes, hail, marvelous thunderstorms, blizzards, ice, wind. In Utah, I experienced the greatest snow on earth, in Texas, where everything is bigger...bigger hail and louder thunderstorms and hurricanes. In Arizona, monsoon season. In California I've known feast or famine. Too much rain and flooding or too little rain and drought. Fires, earthquakes - which aren't exactly weather, Santa Ana winds - It's been fascinating.

So now that the rains have begun, I don't have to feel guilty about staying inside to write. Oh...I'll still hike. I've hiked in the rains for nineteen years. I was even washed away in a flash flood one time along with my dog, but we survived.
