I admit it.
Superstition is my middle name. Yes. Julia Rachel Superstition Barrett. I won't walk under a ladder. I toss extra salt over my left shoulder. I knock wood. God forbid my husband should say something nice about the car because the minute he says, "Man, this car sure is running well..." Bam! The thing will throw a rod at 75mph on the freeway...in the mountains...at night...when it's 20 below. Been there, done that. Don't want to attract the evil eye!
My left sock goes on first and then my right sock. Then my left shoe and then my right shoe. If I'm tired or out of sorts and I accidentally put on the right shoe first, off it comes and on goes the left shoe. It just feels wrong. Obsessive/Compulsive much? Me?
On the other hand, black cats? No worries. The original warning about black cats - two of which live with me by the way, came from the days when certain groups of people thought cats to be familiars of witches or the devil and it was gray cats, not black cats.
Friday the 13th? Never bothers me. I was born on a Friday the 13th at five minutes to midnight and the obstetrician told my mother that if she was superstitious he'd write it on the birth certificate as five minutes after midnight - on the 14th. She said, nah. The 13th will always be good luck. So far so good. No one knows the true origins of the unlucky reputation of the number 13, but I suspect it has to do with a more pagan tradition of 13 lunar cycles during the year as opposed to the 12 months of the solar calendar.
