I'm currently editing my current wip to get it submitted by the 2/15 deadline...oh and I'm leaving to go out of town on the 14th. So only 2 days of editing.

Another School Year
While I’ve given up writing for the time being I rediscovered reading. I’m enjoying so many books. I can’t seem to devour them fast enough. I’d forgotten how much I truly like escaping into a fantasy world.
My fantasy world is coming to an end tomorrow. Summer will be over for us as my daughter starts her first day of high school. She’s NOT a morning person, so having to get her up at 6am to catch the bus should be fun – not. I do not like fighting with this child to drag her butt out of bed, but it’s what I do every day of the school year. Needless to say I’m not looking forward to tomorrow morning.
After finishing my contracted book and subbing it, my editor let me know edits wouldn’t arrive until around Sept 12th. Okay, I can handle that. Since subbing it I’ve been thinking about different ways to make it stronger.
That’s about all I have this week.

Under the Weather
Today I'm a little under the weather. I woke up with an upset stomach. I'm a big baby when it comes to being queasy. I'd rather get sick and be over with it, not linger with nausea all day long.
To make matters worse I'm knee deep in final edits for Adrift, which had a release date change: from Nov 9th to Sept 14th. Needless to say I have to get these done and back to my editor.
Add to the fact I'm not doing much writing either. I'm making slow progress getting back in the swing of things.
Sorry this is short, but I'm just craving my bed.
I'm also blogging out one of my obsessions over at A Pinch of Romance. Drop by and tell me about yours.

Up to my Eyeballs
I'm very busy this week. I'm under tight deadline for a Valentine's short due the 1st. Working on revisions to resubmit to my editor and editing my three book series Shea Manor to submit. Last week I wasn't able to do ANY writing. I thought being on vacation would provide lots of time - HA!!!! I hadn't accounted for the lack of shopping I'd done to that point. DH and I were out all day and night, every day until Christmas Eve.
We've been reflecting on how poorly we managed our preparations this year. We're usually very organized. The kids had an enjoyable holiday, as did my mom. She travels to our house every year and spends about a week here. Being her only child she misses having me and her grandchildren close by. I'm trying to talk her into moving here in the spring. My FIL even jumped on the bandwagon. He provided her with a ton of information for places to live. Gotta love the man! :)
This year I'm not making any New Year's Resolutions. I never stick to them. 2009 was good to me and I'm hoping 2010 is better. While I hoped to see 10 contracts, I only reached 8. LOL I know that's terrific as far as I'm concerned. I'm shooting a little higher this year and hoping for 12 and while I'm at it I'm aiming for an agent and/or publishing contract from a "print" publisher. Those are my only 2 writing hopes for 2010.
Other than that I'm wishing for health and happiness for all my family and friends, especially my online friends who have supported me this past year. I adore you all!

Breaking Up is Hard to Do
There comes a time in every writer’s life when they must say good-bye to an editor. Usually it’s when the editor has decided to move on to something new. This past weekend I was approached by two writer’s at different stages of their careers that wanted to know if they should break up with their editor and/or agent.
The first writer is currently under a four book contract with a large NY publishing house. Her agent seems to be getting ready to retire. While said agent hasn’t confirmed the retirement all signs point in that direction. This writer is in a quandary because she knows there is so much that could be done to increase her sales, but her agent just isn’t doing her job. She doesn’t know if she should start shopping for a new agent or wait it out. The agent has rights to the four books. Only two are published at this point.
The way I see it she’s losing sales. Her blood, sweat, and tears are not getting the perks she should see from her agent. Another friend and I suggested she ask the agent point blank her plans for retirement and if she should start looking for another agent. It’s only fair that the agent give her a timeline. If the agent doesn’t give her any information, maybe it is time to part ways. I’d like to know what you think.
The other is a writing duo. They are working on their second ebook and their second editor. This editor is a writer’s nightmare. She is telling them what words to use and has basically made them rewrite the entire story. Now when they were offered the contract, the publisher stated there would be minimal changes needed on their part.
When does an editor go too far? When is it time for the author to step up and say, “Hey I’m not making these changes.” Personally, I didn’t get good vibes from this situation from the beginning. They were offered a contract in May, received cover art in June and then heard nothing from the publisher for months. Their emails went unanswered. Then one day the publisher reappeared and said they now have an editor for the book. Things only progressed downhill from there.
I advised them to consider opting out of their contract when the publisher went MIA, but because they are new to the business they didn’t want to rock any boats. I understand that, because I’m still learning myself. But I’m sorry at what cost is publication worth it?
Edits are one thing, but re-writing an entire story to fit the editor’s needs doesn’t bode well with me. Seriously, at this point is it still my story or the editors?

Editing
I went to my local chapter writer's meeting on Saturday and a lot was discussed on what types of writers we are. I'm a self-proclaimed pantser thru and thru. It wasn't the type of writer I am that surprised me. It was how much writer's love editing. At least 2/3 the group went on and on about how much they love editing. Me I dislike it - immensely! lol
I don't know why really. Maybe by the time I get to the end of the book I'm tired of it. I don't mind when I go thru edits with my editor's. Well, that's not completely true. If I have to do more than two rounds I get grouchy. My husband will take me to dinner and keep the kids at bay.
I'm not a perfectionist by any means, so it's not that I think my work is perfect. Tho, I won't lie, I wish it were. lol I think it's just when I finish a book I'm done. If I let it sit too long I won't edit it.
It's sad really because I have three contemporary romantic comedies that have potential - if only I'd edit them. I wrote them during NaNo the last few years and when I was done, I was done. I haven't looked back.
As a writer who wants to do this full-time some day it's not a good thing. I need to find a way to commit myself to these books that haven't been edited. These are the books waiting to be submitted to agents. And if all else fails, they'll go to an e-pub.
If there are any writer's out there who are like me and despise editing can you share tips with me on how to just do it? Please? :)
