I love this time of year. It’s so exciting to enjoy all that’s beautiful about the holidays but what I love best is the looming prospect of a New Year and fresh start. I have a lot planned for 2010.
This past week was especially introspective for me. My husband and son went away on a “Guy Trip” to the Yucatan peninsula for eight days. My husband needed to shoot some stock footage of the area and it’s archeological ruins. I’ve been many times. I love the Yucatan and I was tempted to go also but I decided to stay home and finish a WIP instead. I’m so glad I did!
I realized after the guys left the house-how many times an hour they interrupt me. We have a home-based business, so going to the office means crossing the yard or shouting across the house. This week was the first time since 2007 that I was completely alone in the house with peace and quiet. I loved it. I quickly finished one WIP and got out another. Finished that one and got out another… lol
I completely rewrote two short novels in one week adding 10K and 15K to each. I was shocked at how easy it was work without the usual distractions. It felt like enchantment. Typically with all the starting and stopping I do during the day, I’m delighted if I produce 1K.
It made me consider the possibility of planning a working vacation for myself in the future where I can go somewhere with a laptop and hide from my responsibilities. I don’t care where I go. I’ll be working anyway. It could be a hellhole and it wouldn’t matter as long as it’s a peaceful hellhole and no one needs favors or chores done -now.
Has anyone else had to resort to hiding from family, friends and clients or leaving home to get some writing accomplished? If you have, I’d love to hear about your strategy.
