The Universe - Non Writing Topic

So today I’m talking off topic of writing. I might be getting too personal, but after this weekend I have to take this chance and put myself out there to the universe. Before you read any further I want to apologize to anyone I might offend with this personal blog.

I went to my last writer’s meeting of this season on Saturday and a friend of mine who I hadn’t seen in months made a huge non-writing announcement.

She adopted a baby. I cried tears of joy for her. She is my age and has never had children of her own. She has two lovely stepchildren but for any mother – raising a baby from birth is precious. My friend just couldn’t seem to get pregnant and fertility wasn’t an option. She felt it opens too many cans of worms.

In some ways I have to agree. Though the hubby and did go that route sometimes I wonder if it’s right. Anyway, during a break I talked to her and she said when her husband and her decided to adopt they hadn’t realized how hard it would be. They had a certain criteria and they weren’t coming close to finding it.

So they sat down again and decided kids weren’t in the cards for them. Now, most days the DH and I feel this way too. We struggle with our loss and still question whether or not we’ll be parents together. DH has no children of his own. L

Once my friend and her husband gave up a baby fell into their laps – literally. No joking. A friend of a friend of a friends kid found out she was pregnant (and very far along) and decided they weren’t ready to be parents. They asked my friend to adopt. They joyfully said yes.

There’s always the possibility that the kids could change their minds between now and November when the adoption becomes final, but that’s the risk every adoptive parent takes. Either way this child lived in a healthy home for six months. That’s not to say the parents aren’t healthy.

Why am I telling you all this? Because I’m putting myself out there. I’m opening myself to this universe like my friend told me to do. I’m telling everyone who will listen just in case they know a friend of a friend who has a baby they can’t care for and need to put up for adoption.

With two embryos left we thought about going the surrogate route. The people in our lives who want to help are either too young or too old! LOL

So here I am universe!

National Rose Month - the Flower of Love

Let's hear it for the roses...all sizes, shades and colors! The wonderful aroma, beautiful bouquets, bushes, etc., all around us. Colors of Roses and what they mean:

RED: Known as the Lover's Rose, shades can go from light to deep crimson. What better Valentine's gift than red roses? Maybe with chocolates to add a special "romance" meaning?

PINK: Expresses gentility, femininity, elegance, admiration. Deep pink: gratitude. Light pink: grace.

WHITE: Represents purity, innocence and celebrates weddings and young love.

YELLOW: Evokes a sense of warmth and friendship. In Victorian times, it symbolized jealousy!
ORANGE: Symbolize desire, attraction, and passion...that can lead to a wild romance!

LAVENDER, LILAC, PURPLE: Displays enchantment, and imagination...and love at first sight.

TURQUOISE: Expresses well-being, calmness, fertility.

BLUE:  Embodies a sense the impossible and of mystery while hoping for an extraordinary chance for the beginning of something new.

GOLD: No better way to say "I Care", "Welcome Back", "Remember Me", my friend.

Whatever color you choose, you can't go wrong...except with black. No romance there. Just sorrow so stay away from them. Although, I'm sure some paranormal romances will feature these black roses as the choice of shade for dark tales!

"Nothing But Sex" with Fran Lee!

Fran Lee took me up on this interview and answered a few "Challenging" questions about her newest book, a standalone story in the Cougar Challenge series.

Katalina: Fran, your newest book “Nothing but Sex” is damn sexy, but it also features a fated relationship that was years in the making. Tell us about your heroine Lee Blackhorse and hero Mike Running Elk.

F: Lee was married to a hot NA ex-movie star for ten years. Everyone warned her he was a jerk. When she realized they were right, it was quite a slap upside the head for a woman who already had a self-image problem. But you know what they say about seeing yourself through the eyes of another? When Lee looks in the mirror, she sees a forty-two year old woman with cellulite and crow’s feet.

However, her thirty year old Saturday assistant sees something else. Mike has had the hots for her since he was eighteen. Before she divorced the jerk. And even though Lee thinks Mike is sexy and hot, she feels like her attraction to the younger guy is not normal. So she ignores it like it doesn’t exist.

Mike has been hot for the older woman since he asked her if he could do chores for her to make money after his dad died. And after she divorced Howard Blackhorse, he has wanted desperately to make a move…except that she acts like he’s a kid, and not a man.

The two of them have known each other for twelve years, and have been secretly attracted for just as long. All that is needed is a catalyst. When Lee finds the Tempt the Cougar blog online, and realizes that men (like her ex) can chase women who are a lot younger than they are, and the world accepts it as “normal”, so why should she feel like her attraction to Mike is any different? And Mike is just waiting for her to realize he’s no kid…and that he’s old enough to ring her bells…royally.

Katalina: How much of Lee Blackhorse is running wild in your veins?

F: How much of any of my heroines is running wild in my veins? LOL! Every doggoned bit!

Katalina: Would you take the “Cougar Challenge”? If so what would tempt you to say yes?

F: Not only would I take it, I would revel in it. Um…but first I have to find a man who doesn’t run like the devil is after him when I look his way. *sigh* It’s easy to be a cougar when every man on earth is younger than you are. ;)

Katalina: When you write these steamy tales do you wear tight jeans over your shapely ass the way “Lee Blackhorse” does?

F: No…I like to be comfy when I write. It’s PJs or loose sweats for me.

Katalina: What is your first erotic memory? When did you first recognize the call of Eros?

F: Um…you mean as an adult? Because I was a pretty precocious child.

Katalina: What single thing puts you in the mood?

F: Being awake. LOL! You did ask!

Katalina: If you had to choose one object as a totem of your sexuality what would it be?

F: Ooooo…what a baaaaad question for a person like me. You mean besides my bright purple gel ten speed double rabbit? Um…I would have to say my dream catcher. Because I have some pretty graphic and sexy dreams, and I like to keep them close at all times.

Katalina: What is the most sensuous scene you’ve ever seen in a movie?

F: Hmmm. That’s a real toughie, because there are so very few movies that have really delicious, sensuous scenes. Of course, I can make them far more sensuous as I think about them later, and embellish them with my own brand of “sexy”.

I will go with a very innocent love scene, in Avatar, where Jake is talking to Neytiri after his initiation ceremony. They are under the tendrils of the life tree and she is telling him he can now choose a woman. When he tells her he has made his choice, and they lean in and touch noses so deliciously? There is a sensuous overtone to their innocent caresses. To her people, touch is the exquisite sensory investigation of things. The scent of his warm skin…the heady scent of her sweet arousal. Their breaths mingling as they wait for that first slow, tentative touch of trembling lips. As they embrace, and he tugs her hungrily up into his arms, they sink to their knees and she leans down to kiss him. Of course, the image of them pressed together, he slightly lower than she, wearing nothing but loincloths, gives the erotic author in me free rein to imagine his lean, hot length sliding sensuously into her as she gives a small cry of delight and clutches his head to her breast, while she rides out the delirious need they feel for each other (without a soul in the viewing audience privy to the joy of their joining).

Of course, that is just an innocent love scene. There is not room here to go into the hot ones.

Katalina: Would you include another women in a ménage scene or do you like to make your heroines the center of attention?

F: I was never one to share. I prefer to write my heroine with two hot men there to make her doubly happy.

Katalina: Have you ever had a girl crush?

F: Of course I have had girl crushes. People are often deeply attracted to others, not just when they are opposite sexes. I have never followed through on those crushes. I find that having wonderful female friends is much more rewarding than having a valuable friendship changed by sexual involvement.

Katalina: I’ve noticed you often write independent female characters that start off at a disadvantage, consciously decide to pursue what they want and progressively gain strength as they connect with their sexuality by the end of the story they’re soaring. If you could be one of your heroines who would you choose and why?

F: See question 2 above. LOL! I am my characters. But with the artistic freedom of a writer, I can do things in books that I wouldn’t dare do in real life. :P

Katalina: Are there any genres, themes or sub-genres you plan to explore?

F: Oh, certainly! I love paranormal, but you have to realize that for a novel to be paranormal, it does not have to be overtly so. It can contain paranormal elements, like my book, Out of Her Dreams, where both heroine and hero have had dreams about each other long before they meet. Their dreams come to hot, sizzling fruition when they finally get together.

I just finished and submitted another book with heavy paranormal elements, tentatively titled Woman on Fire. My heroine has remained single and oblivious to most men because her ideal man is one no one can possibly compare to. She believes him to be a figment of her imagination…a hallucination that happened during a near-death experience when she was a teenager. But he returns often in her very graphic and sexy adult dreams, and she finds it impossible to become interested in other men.

The hero also had a dream. His was part of a sweat lodge ceremony, during which his spirit took flight and carried him across time and space to find a part of himself that was lost.

The instant, intense antagonism/attraction that they feel when they meet is far more than sexual.
I also want to delve into vampires. Love hot, sexy vamps.

Katalina: Lucky girl, you’re going to RomantiCon in October! How are you preparing? What’s your battle plan?

F: I am going primarily to meet in person all the wonderful authors and publishers and reviewers I know only online. I have paid up front from the plane and the fees, I’ve found myself a roomie to share the expense of the lodgings, and I am purchasing the promo items I plan to take with me to give away during the meet and greet.

I love the idea of meeting readers, talking with them, and getting the skinny on what they want most from their romance reads. If I just happen to meet any of the hot cover models on my books, I might just try out a few of my Cougar techniques on them. (I’m sure someone there will be kind enough to hold them down for me so they can’t escape.) :P

Katalina: I loved reading "Nothing But Sex" This is a great read!

F: I'm thrilled you liked it! Thanks so much for the interview, Kat! You are a love!

The Early Bird...

remembers to post!

My Everything, my romance suspense with Cobblestone, is showing up in a few new places. Reader and reviewer response to this book interests me. This book was so easy to write...it sort of wrote itself - yet it resonates with readers.

The theme of lovers parted, suffering tragic losses, and then reunited seems to be universally appealing. It certainly appeals to me. This is the second book I've written about two soul mates who met at the wrong time but are given the once in a lifetime opportunity to be together again. The first, Anytime Darlin', will be re-released with Siren in August.

I suppose one reason I gravitate to this theme is that my husband and I share it. We were together as young teens. We parted under tragic circumstances, suffered...well, I suffered, he dated models...but then reunited in the most romantic of ways.
Here's my dedication to him in my book, Beauty and the Feast:

"I believe in love at first sight. I’m convinced each of us does indeed have a soul mate. We may not always be so lucky as to find them in our lifetime, but that doesn’t negate my belief in them. My husband and I knew each other for fourteen years before we married. During those fourteen years, we spent perhaps a total of five weeks in each others company. There were two extended periods of time, one period that lasted for three years and another for six years, during which we had no contact whatsoever. Yet, when I received a phone call at 2 a.m. and the man I loved but hadn’t seen or heard from in six years asked if he could come see me, I answered yes without hesitation.
"Eight hundred miles later, he emerged from his vehicle, took me in his arms and carried me off to bed. That same day, he asked me to marry him. It’s been twenty-six years and we’ve never looked back. Still in love, still soul mates."

If you want to pick up a copy of My Everything, it's available at Cobblestone Press and on Fictionwise.

Roman leather tethers

“Owned By Rome” came out last Friday and I’ve already received lots of good and very constructive feedback. Yes, there are Latin words used in “Owned By Rome” but they are simple nouns and adjectives and once they are read in context the meaning is clear. The good news… I’ll never use this much Latin ever again!  I promise! Lol So here’s another excerpt from “Owned By Rome”. In this scene Atellus has foolishly decided it would be romantic to camp alone in the forest and live out a few of his favorite boyhood fantasies with his newest acquisition the Celtic slave-girl, Rutila. He sadly discovers how very uncooperative she is with his plan. A “torques” is a bronze slave collar, which Atellus has proudly put on Rutila. She gets caught trying to remove the collar. Atellus is very much in love with Rutila and has been struggling to get her to speak openly to him all day. He plans to win her over with kindness, a bon-fire and ermine bed-furs but his evening of seduction goes awry.
….He saw how bothered she was. “Rutila.” His gaze burned possessively. “Be sensible. The torques is to prevent ownership disputes. You belong to me now and I will tolerate no claims from others.” He had heard of unethical venalicius reselling the same servus numerous times to multiple unwitting owners. He would have none of that. She was his to keep, forever. Her pettish irritation over having to wear the torques made no sense to him. “I want you to understand the torques is a sign of my esteem. I do not want to lose you.” He spoke firmly. “Eat.”
“No.” She snapped at him. Her eyes flitted about the castra. “I eat with a pugio.” She was clearly disappointed no sharp objects had emerged from the packs.
He slowly shook his head no. “You also fight with a pugio. I deliberately provided finger foods and that’s how we will eat until we know and trust each other better. Now please eat something.” He grew impatient with her stubbornness. “You have eaten almost nothing today.”
She glared at him, broke free of his grip and scrambled to her feet. She dashed toward the hobbled pack mules, taking long, fast strides.
He was on his feet in a flash and chasing after her.
Rutila’s long legs were incredibly fast. She almost out ran him.
He caught up to her and grabbed her seconds before she reached the pack mules. He threw his arms around her and dragged her back to the fire. “That was a mistake.” He panted as he struggled to hold on to her writhing, leaping body. “I’m not a monster.” He breathlessly lugged her resisting body back to the castra. “I just want you to eat something.” He thought she was so beautiful just the way she was. He could even imagine her a little plumper. He certainly did not intend to see his beautiful ancilla waste away on the journey.
He picked up a leather tether from one of the packs and deftly tied his wrist to hers, so she could not bolt away. “Sit!” he ordered her in a booming voice. “Eat.”
She sat only because he pulled her down, but she did not eat. She scowled resentfully at the tether that linked them and scooted as far away as the short length of braided leather would allow.
He smiled, feeling victorious. He was hungry, so he ate. He poured himself a cup of wine with his free hand and watched her carefully from the corner of his eye, thinking her to be a very unpleasant dining companion.
She continually glared at him or frowned resentfully at the tether. Every time he refilled his wine cup, she smirked as if she enjoyed some private amusement he was not aware of. He tore the dried venison into narrow strips and chewed it up with his square white teeth and washed the venison down with a generous amount of wine.
She looked disgusted as he grew a bit tipsy.
The tether connecting their wrists was short. If he raised his cup to his lips or reached for a fig, her hand was forced to follow his motions. She was strung to him as if she were a resentful puppet, yet she refused to move any closer to him to lengthen the slack on the tether. Her lips turned downward. Clearly she hated the situation she was in.
He patted the ground beside him. “You could move closer.” He chuckled at her self-imposed predicament. “Who here is starving and refuses to eat out of sheer stubbornness? Let’s see a show of hands.” He smiled at her and raised his arm high above his head.
Of course Rutila’s hand went up involuntarily, though she struggled to pull downward on the tether. Her limp hand hovered high in the air.
He grinned at the sight of her raised hand. “I see you’re ready to admit you’re hungry.” His eyes gleamed from wine. He tossed a dried fig in her lap. “Eat it.”
She stared hatefully at the wrinkled fig, refusing to touch it.
His eyes sparkled with amusement. “Who here has the mind of a mule?” Again he raised his arm and her hand went up too, but this time he had to actually lift her weight off the ground, she heartily fought his actions. He laughed at her dour expression. The wine made his speech a bit sloppy. “By Jupiter, Rutila, you’re humorless!” He wished her attitude would warm just a little. He so longed for some contact or connection with her. “Am I the most formosus and virilis dominor you could wish for? You know that I am.” He burst into laughter. “So let’s see a show of hands.”
This time she was prepared for what was coming. She wrapped her fingers tightly around the tether before he could fully raise his arm and swiftly yanked the tether downward.
He was caught off guard and lurched forward onto his face, spilling his cup of wine onto the ground. He landed chin first in a puddle of wine. He looked up at her with an expression of smoldering disappointment.
Rutila tensed, as if waiting for him to lash out at her, threaten or strike her with his fist, but he didn’t. As dominor he knew he had to be above such petty provocations even if she wasn’t. He had to set an example. He recovered himself from the ground, sat straight and silently wiped his chin on his sleeve, but his heart silently burned with the dread of betrayal.
She seemed worried about what he might be thinking and he wasn’t ready to put her at ease. He wanted her to reconsider her actions. They sat in silence for some time before he decided to pack the food away and add more wood to the fire…

(These two do end up on the ermine bed-furs and much is revealed.)

Mish Mash

I swear I feel like I’ve got the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease. I can’t remember anything anymore. I almost forgot to blog today.

Let’s see what’s going on in Amber’s life. I’m not sure what I’ve blogged about so here goes nothing. If you’ve heard this all before I’m truly sorry.

I’m busy putting the final touches on my cougar story, should have this in my editors hands by Friday.

I received another contract last week or the week before for book 2 in the Freedom Fantasies series – Spend The Night With Me. Book 3 – Play With Me is with my editor.

I have an editor interested in my work. One I’ve never written for. It’s a publishing house I’ve wanted to get my foot in the door though. I sent her a short blurb of the story I’m going to write for her and she seemed genuinely excited. It’s a M/M/F – tentatively titled Stranded. I’m really excited about writing this book and promised it to her by July 1st. Please keep me in your thoughts that I can finish this project and get it in her hands. I set the deadline so I didn’t procrastinate, like I’m very good at doing.

My editor at AMP is interested in reading my romantic comedy. So, I’m working on edits to submit that one to her. Oh and I have a new release coming Friday June 4th. I haven’t received my cover art yet and I’m growing nervous with only three days left. But I know Tuesday will do an awesome job. She always does.

The book Sliding Home is M/M. Here’s a R excerpt. Until next Tuesday.

Oh before I forget. Kaye Manro has graciously allowed me to interview her. I’ve posted the interview on both my blogs. Please drop by one or both and show her some love.

Blurb:

Alex loves baseball, so when the majors come calling he is thrilled. The only thing that would make his happiness complete is a partner to share it with. Although his best friend, Rick, knows Alex is gay, he doesn't know that Alex has been in love with him for years. And with his departure for the major leagues imminent, he's not sure now is the best time to tell him. But after an evening of celebration turns into a night of pleasure, Alex is confused. Does Rick want a relationship with him? Or, will he walk out of Rick's life forever, wondering what might have been?

Alex's career has hit a home run but his love for Rick is the ultimate victory. If he can figure out a way to slide into home plate, he'll do more than score.

Excerpt:

He thought he’d seen something earlier. A spark in Rick’s gray eyes. He couldn’t have imagined it, could he? Again, when he’d rubbed up against him while they were playing pool, he saw the look.
It was desire.
Then Rick had stormed off to the bar for another drink. Was he afraid of hanging around and letting Alex see his raging hard-on?
Too late.
Alex had noticed it and got hard instantaneously. He was so hard he’d thought about going into the bathroom and rubbing himself until he felt relieved. Somehow, he knew relief wouldn’t come from masturbation so he decided against it.
Besides how would he explain his long absence?
No. Alex had suffered through.
When he asked if he could crash at his friend’s house he’d had an ulterior motive. He wanted to see if things would be different when they were alone. He wanted to know if Rick would mention how his body reacted to Alex’s.
He didn’t. In fact, he’d never mentioned it once. Even when they entered Rick’s apartment, he never said a word. He retrieved the blanket and pillow for him, before heading to his room.
One thing was certain; Rick couldn’t get out of the living room quick enough.
It was like he was afraid of what would happen if he stayed too long. Could he be wrestling with the same feelings Alex was? He wasn’t sure, but he didn’t want to act on it just yet. If his friend did have feelings for him, he wanted to address it before he had to leave.
Knowing Rick was waiting for him would make his transition much easier.
Alex wondered if he should go into Rick’s room and see if he was still awake. If he was, they could talk about what had happened. Worry settled into the pit of his stomach. What if Rick did feel something, but refused to act on it? What if he rejected Alex?
Alex couldn’t handle being rejected by his best friend. He cared for him too much. He didn’t want to ruin the friendship they had by stepping over any lines. No, it was best for him to stay put on the couch. If Rick wanted him, he would have to be the one to make the first move. That way, Alex wouldn’t be treading into uncertain waters.
Disappointed, but satisfied with his decision, Alex closed his eyes and tried to concentrate on anything other than his aching balls.
An hour later he was still struggling with the tightness in his crotch. He thought about relieving himself numerous times but was afraid of Rick walking in on him or worse—overhearing his moans.
Unable to fight the urge, Alex jumped off the couch and headed toward Rick’s bedroom.
“Fuck it.” He had nothing to lose at this point— except his friendship with Rick.
