Dare to Leap "Into The Flames" Box Set!

Look at this gorgeous box set! You can't go wrong with these talented authors, every one of them is a gem!
My guest today is Cindy Spencer Pape. She is one of the smartest and most versatile authors I know.
Dare to leap into the flames! Get this box set today!

Cindy Spencer Pape:
All That Jazz!
Thanks to Katalina for having me here today. She’s not only one of my favorite authors, but one of my favorite people, too!
Into the Flames is a boxed set by seven authors: Nina Pierce, Desiree Holt, Sam Cheever, NJ Walters, Liz Crowe, Adele Downs, and me, Cindy Spencer Pape. I was unbelievably thrilled when Nina asked me to be a part of this project—this is a fantastic group of authors to work with. I did hesitate for half a second when she said, “And either your hero or heroine has to be a firefighter.”
Firefighters as a group, are something I know nothing about. I’ve never written a firefighter character before. I don’t know the lingo, the science, the vibe. She did say I could write any genre I wanted, within romance, so I thought about paranormal or steampunk—kind of my go-to styles. While I looked into firefighting, I realized I didn’t want to go Victorian—even steampunk. It was pretty seedy. The 1920s, however, really appealed. It was an era of enormous change, socially and technologically and firefighting was no exception.
So not only did I have to research a whole new field, I had to study up on a whole new era. And I loved every minute. I found myself online, playing a lot of early Jazz. So here’s a few of my favorite 20’s songs. Some tie into the story, but others are just iconic. They’re not all the original versions, since there was no YouTube in the 20’s, but in their day, these pieces were as rebellious as death metal today. I’m stopping at 1926, when the story is set.  I hope you enjoy the music, and I hope you enjoy my story, Where there’s Smoke as well as the rest of the collection.

Book Description:

British Alpha wolf Jake Marsden spends his days among humans, pursuing a lucrative music career and avoiding his pack’s politics. When his current DJ tour takes him to the US, he stops in Los Lobos to visit family, and runs into the one Wolf he never wants to see again—the mate who rejected his claim.

While visiting her brother in Los Lobos, free-spirited Lexi Luparell is shocked to encounter the Wolf she’d denied when they were teens. Now she must face her guilt for the cruel way she spurned him all those years ago, make amends, and admit the truth. Jake was right all along—they’re meant to mate.

Lexi would love to explore the mate concept and her overwhelming attraction to virile, alpha Wolf Jake, but he wants nothing to do with her. How can she break down his defenses when she’s the reason he built them in the first place?

Jake dates only human women now. Lexi had her shot at being his mate, and she threw it away. But when her life is threatened, he may have to rethink his position and do whatever it takes to claim his one true mate.

Excerpt:
A billion butterflies battered Lexi's stomach. She shifted her attention from Ross to the piano. Sure enough, the music had stopped, and Jake faced her from his seat on the bench. Man oh man, the heavy stare from those sky blue eyes sent shivers skittering down her spine. His gaze held the same intensity she remembered from him as a kid, as if he saw into the heart of people, exposing their deepest secrets. It had driven her crazy back then, and she'd spent much time teasing him, pulling his hair, trying to distract him from being so serious all of the damn time. They were teenagers—partying was supposed to be their sole focus.

With his ice-blue stare locked on her, Jake rose to his feet, all taut muscle and predatory power. His energy swept over her like a tsunami, forcing all of the moisture to abandon her mouth while parts much lower wept with want. Her inner Wolf howled, answering the call of this Alpha, the first Dominant male ever to make her sit up and take notice. Holy crap. Her muscles shook with the need to bound over to him, jump in his arms, wrap her legs around his torso and writhe against his hard, hot, tattooed body.

Jake said something to his uncle then stalked straight at her, cutting a path right through the middle of the tables and the many, too-curious patrons.

         A whimper escaped her throat.

Surprise sparked in her brother’s brown eyes. "You're kidding me. Him?" He burst out laughing. "Wow, sis, that's some major, big-time irony right there."

Darci’s expression conveyed her bewilderment. "Now what are you two talking about?"

Her annoying brother grinned. "See that angry Alpha headed our way? My sister here rejected him when they were teens and he's apparently her—"

Lexi socked her brother in the ribs. "Shut it, Ross."

"Ouch." Ross rubbed his side and chuckled at her plight. The jerk. "Come on, Lexi, you have to admit the hilarity of the situation."

No, she did not. Nor did she have to admit that J-Bird was right all those years ago. He was her mate. O to the M to the G…. They were mates.

Even so, he didn't look happy to see her at all. In fact, he looked positively enraged. Shit, shit and triple shit. What a mess she'd made eight years ago. Well, she was woman enough to pull on her big-girl panties and fix it. She straightened her spine and lifted her chin in challenge, meeting Jake's stormy stare. He halted before her.

I can do this. "Hey J-Bird. Nice to see you." Lovely. Her voice sounded like she'd eaten the gravel from the lot in front of Gee's bar. Embarrassment heated her cheeks.

One breath, two breaths, three…. J-Bird glared. Tension coiled between them in the silence. Lexi bit the inside of her cheek to avoid babbling at him. She'd said hello. It was his turn. Damn it, J-Bird, say something. He wasn't making this easy.

"Alexina."  His arctic tone dismissed her and slapped her in the face at the same time, leaving her disappointed and confused. No one called her by her full name. No one except her parents when she'd done something wrong as a kid. He might as well have said, "Screw you," while slamming a door in her face.

His focus shifted to her brother. "Hello, Ross. Been a while." His hand shot out to grasp her brother's in a cordial shake.

"Good to see you, Jake. Join us for lunch? My treat. We can catch up on old times."

"No, thank you. I'm done. Nice to see you again, Ross." Jake nodded at Darci. "Miss." He brushed past them and out the door.

"What. Just. Happened?" The, “I'm done,” he uttered in his delicious British accent seemed aimed more at her than at her brother's offer. And the fact he hadn't even looked at her before stalking out all sexy in his gloom and doom? Yeah, that hurt.

"I think you know, sis." The amusement left her brother's face and sympathy glimmered in his gaze. "Question is, what are you going to do about it?"

She'd never run from a fight in her life. She wouldn't start now. "Grab a table. I'll be back in a second. Or not." She ignored her brother's knowing grin and hurried out the door.

Got busy cleaning...almost forget it's Saturday!

Excerpt Copyright 2015 Fran Lee

Celia hung away the suit and tossed the shirt into the laundry along with the underwear. Kurt had vanished into his room, leaving her to her own devices. She started supper then washed the bed linens, including the comforter with the cum stain. She had made certain she’d bought another couple of boxes of condoms.

She glanced in her mirror and frowned at her hair. He kept it fashionably business-short but it was growing out a bit, so she used her clippers to take off half an inch all over. He could trim the sides and back for her later.

Chuckling over her ridiculous efforts to save a multimillionaire a few bucks here and there, she dragged her undershirt off and dropped it in with the load of stuff that remained in the laundry basket. Scratching her chest, she shut the washer and headed back into the kitchen, and stopped dead in her tracks as she glanced around at the three female faces that jerked her way. Wide female eyes dragged over her bare chest, unshaven face and mussed hair and she fought the grin that threatened to break across her face. Even CeeCee was ogling her with open mouth and tongue hanging out.

“I didn’t realize anyone was here or I’d have taken my pants off too.” Her voice deepened and she watched as the three friends from the circle nearly expired from excitement. Marta brought her wide gaze back up to her face and Charlene choked on her coffee.

“Celia?” Marta whispered hoarsely. “Oh my God! Is that really you?”

She grinned slowly. “Sure is. You want to meet my boss?” Her brow lifted.

“Is he really in your body?” Charlene whispered.

Before she could answer, Kurt came into the kitchen swaddled in her terry robe, his hair wrapped in a towel. “Ah, I see you brought the rest of the witches for a visit.”

CeeCee bit her lip to keep from laughing as the other two almost screamed with shock. Marta stared at him then looked at Celia. “Oh God! I’m so sorry! We didn’t mean… I mean, we didn’t think…”

Kurt reached for the coffeepot and poured himself a cup, added sugar and cream, and sank onto the chair closest to Charlene. “Yeah, I know what you mean. Any idea how to get me back in my body, ladies?”

Celia listened as her friend continued to babble abject apologies, and finally she said, “Enough. He knows you’re sorry and so do I. What did Henry find out, Marta?”

Marta reddened and compressed her lips. “He thinks it will begin to reverse itself but there’s no way to determine when that will happen. Have either of you experienced any changes that would indicate you are returning to…um…normal?”

Kurt met Celia’s gaze and she swallowed hard. “I am swearing less but that might be because of a conscious effort on my part. And Kurt seems to be getting a potty mouth lately. But nothing else comes to mind. How about you, Kurt?” Using his given name brought a blush to her cheeks.

He shook his head. “Last time I looked I was still missing my cock. I’m not sure I want to wait for it to happen by itself, ladies. Can’t you do another hocus-pocus thing that will speed it up?”

Charlene slapped her hand over her mouth at his statement. “You really think it was a bunch of hocus-pocus? I’ll have you know it was a well-thought-out, carefully constructed spell…and seeing the two of you like this, I’m not so sure it hit the wrong people.”

Celia blinked. Kurt glared. Cerise stared. “What are you saying, Charlene?”

“I’m saying that the spell was constructed to teach some desperately needed lessons. The people who needed those lessons the most might have somehow diverted the spell their way.”

Celia stared at her numbly. “But that’s…impossible.

Kurt glared at her. “You mean just maybe Celia needed to learn that lesson instead of someone else’s boyfriend?”

Marta glanced back and forth from one to the other and shook her head. “Not necessarily, Mr. Masters.”

Celia gasped and sniffed back the tears that threatened to fall. “Not necessarily?”

Marta frowned at her boss and began to twist a small set of crystal beads in her fingertips. She inhaled deeply and said in a soft, vacant voice, “The selfless one shall bear the pain for the one whose ego won’t refrain, and when the selfish one doth give, the better half within shall live…”

CeeCee clapped both hands over her mouth and Charlene chewed her lower lip, her eyes wide and frightened. “Marta?” She waved a hand in front of their friend’s face and the older woman seemed to wake from a nap, blinking and glancing at them questioningly.

More Black Hills Wolves! Virginia Cavanaugh's "Worth Fighting For"

Black Hill Wolves #26 is here! Virginia Cavanaugh's "Worth Fighting For" is available today!

Blurb:
When Myka Hayes accepted the interior design job for The Den on Tao pack lands, she didn’t expect to be reunited with the wolf that’s haunted her dreams for the last six years. But there he stood behind the bar, looking all too sexy and mysterious.

Kaden Boyd was ready to leave his past behind and begin his future. At least until Myka walked into Gee’s Bar and stirred feelings inside him he’d thought he’d forgotten.

Both burn with desire for each other, but their past complicates things. Not wanting to cause any problems in his new life, Kaden tries to resist his attraction to Myka, but she has other plans. Once and for all, she intends to make him see that some things are Worth Fighting For.

Excerpt:
Myka rounded a corner and spotted Kaden exiting a walk-in fridge. “Hey. I’m glad you’re all for forgetting it because I sure didn’t want to have to tell you I’m not interested. A lot has changed since I was a teenager, including my taste in men.”
He laughed.
It pissed her off. “What’s so funny?”
“Honey, if that was you not being interested in the main bar, then I would be scared to see what interested looked like.”
Damn him. “You’re very rude.”
He shrugged again and cast her a smile. “I try my best.”
“What? To be an irritating ass?”
Both of his brows shot up. “Wow. Now who’s being rude?”
She wanted to throw something at him. How in the hell could she even have been attracted to him for even a second? “You started it.”
“Mature.”
“Forget it.” She turned and stomped for the exit. This wasn’t going to work. Gee would have to get rid of the guy or find a different interior designer.
Large powerful fingers dug into her upper arm, and she found herself spun around and then plastered to a wall. His big muscled body pressed against hers.
“I think we got off on the wrong foot,” he said.
She clenched her teeth, staring up at him. Emotions waged a war inside her. She was pissed, but at the same time, her body was extremely aware of his. His scent filled her nose. Musk, pine, and clean sweat. Desire was on the rise. “Your point?”
He rolled his eyes. “Fine. I’ll apologize first.”
She waited but he said nothing. “Well?”
“Well, what?”
“You said you were going to apologize.”
“I did.” He smiled down at her.
She growled. “No, you didn’t.”
“Do you ever do anything but argue?”
She shoved him. “That’s it! Get off me.”
He didn’t give an inch. “I’m sorry, all right?”
She blew out a breath to try and clear the few strands of her blonde hair falling from their pins into her view. He reached up and brushed them away. Holy shit! Her body trembled, and desire coiled tighter in her lower belly. How in the hell could she be attracted to him still?
“Are you always so rude to people?” she asked.
One side of his mouth tipped up in a smile. “No. And to be honest, I’m kind of mad at myself for provoking you.”
“Then why did you do it?”
He cleared his throat again and stepped away, running a hand through his hair. “Doesn’t matter. How about we call a truce?”
She tugged at the edge of her blouse. It had ridden up during their struggle. “Fine. No more insults?”
“Deal.”
She gave a crisp nod then let her gaze roam over the room. There were lots of things she wanted to ask him. Their truce didn’t exactly invite her to play Twenty Questions, though. She chanced a glance at him and caught him staring at her with a quizzical tilt to his head. Crazy thing was he didn’t even try to flinch or hide his open interest.

Excerpt:
“Merci, mon petites.” The albino’s voice sounded like gravel in the cylinder-shaped microphone. “I’ll be breaking for a short time. Youse keep yourselves amused and stay out of trouble.”
“Remember…let me do most of the talking,” Ian said as soon as the crooner stood and started making his way to the edge of the stage.
The captain merely nodded, taking in the other members of the band, who didn’t leave their spots on the stage.
Instead, they started playing again, a perky jazz tune with a good measure of saxophone. A few of the couples positioned around the room came out to the dancing square positioned in the middle of the room and began swaying or grinding to the beat. Ian kept his expression neutral although his gut churned at the visual.
Their host grunted as he pulled back a chair, and, as a guest, Ian stood as manners dictated. The captain didn’t.
“Standing on ceremony as if you were still a gentleman?” Janken chuckled.
Ian sat and smiled. “Mama’s rules ne’er do disappear.”
“Mine did, thank God.” The albino tapped his long fingernails on the table top in perfect rhythm with the beat from the stage. “Who’s your friend? She smells like a garden.”
“Castoa--”
“Captain Castoa of the Liberté.” She’d cut him off and extended a hand in peace.
For a blind man, Janken saw remarkable things, and he grabbed her, leaning forward over the small table. He flipped her palm between both of his and sniffed at her wrist. Without rebuke, she submitted to his eccentricities while Ian experienced a sudden desire to throw the skin trader from his seat and put the captain’s fancy knife through him.
“Divine. Absolutely delicious.” Then he let her go. “Such a pretty scent for a woman around filth and dirt all the time.”
They all fell silent. Ian couldn’t find his words at the moment, a red haze of jealousy winding its course through him. Being jealous of a blind man seemed a bit ridiculous, but at the same time he wanted permission to touch her, to smell her—liberties denied him that Janken had taken without even bothering to ask..
Luckily, he didn’t have to produce the next piece of conversation; the albino did the work for him. “Now what does a marked want so bad he’s willing to darken my establishment with his sinful presence?”
Time for business. “I need to find Luther.”
“You’re not the only one.”
“I’ve got merchandise he’s requested, but a delay had me late to our meeting point. I know you can tell me where he’s hiding.” He’d bet his life on it.
The two illegal-dealing men weren’t friends, but information about anything and everything black market or top secret seemed to be in the albino’s possession. The Cursed were always in need of intelligence. Information allowed them to stay one step ahead of the authorities and determine who’d want their services.
“I may know something, but the rules still apply.”
Ian nodded. “Yes, and she’s got something good to share.”
A white eyebrow rose. “Eh? What could this marvelous woman who captains an airship full of foul-smelling, disgusting men have to tell me that would equal such a trade?”
Excerpt Option 3: Sorella Corvino only made promises she kept. So when she told the crumb in the next cell, “Once I get out of here, I’m going to kill you,” those were words of truth, not fiction.
The evil bastard leaned forward, mere inches from the bars, and grinned. “I prefer my bits handled by a gorgeous dish, but in a pinch, you’ll do.” His six yellowed teeth stabbing up through pinkish-white gums were a stark contracts to his soot colored skin and graying eyes, the gray no doubt a product of the drugs and rotgut sold on every corner in Pontevedre. No one escaped the filth and poison festering in the streets of every European city unscathed.
“In your dreams.” She stepped towards him, eyes narrowed. Maybe she wouldn’t wait until she got out.
“That’s what your girl is dreaming of tonight. Me and my co—“
She slid her hand between the bars and grasped the part of his anatomy he wanted to talk about in every other sentence, effectively cutting him off.
