Another Saturday...

I will have two more print books out by the end of 2014...

Ellora's Cave has my two full length books slated to be released in print over the next few months. I don't have the exact release dates, but when I do, I will let everyone know.

Never Tempt Fate is slated first, then, much later in the year, My Sexy Sensei. It's sad that these beautiful Trade paperbacks are so darned expensive, but folks seem to enjoy having a paperback with a glossy cover in hand. Personally, I prefer to have the e-books sell well. The author gets a better royalty rate.

I have noticed in the past that when a book comes out in paperback, the readers will click on the e-book to buy because it is less costly. Have you noticed that?

Just in case you have never read Never Tempt Fate (or Dictated by Fate) here is an excerpt.

Never Tempt Fate

Tonio pressed the doorbell button a second time, glancing at his watch. He ran his hand through his dark hair and wondered if perhaps she had gotten cold feet. He was about to press it again when the door came open quickly and she stood there, wearing those ratty torn jeans and another very old, very large T-shirt. Her feet were bare and she looked as if she had just run her own hands through her unruly mop of red curls as she stepped back and gestured for him to step inside. His gut wrenched with a shot of white-hot need that almost made him reach out and drag her into his arms. No woman should have that power over a man. No woman should look so utterly edible wearing such a ridiculous outfit!

He responded to her gesture, stepping inside her apartment and glancing about at the room. The boxes were stacked along the wall, allowing room to walk. She had not unpacked. He drew a deep breath and turned to gaze at her. She stretched with an oddly catlike movement that made his mouth begin to water and rubbed her back.

“The coffee’s almost ready. Come on in here.” She led the way into her kitchen and he could not help but stare at that very attractive ass again. She seemed completely unconcerned that she might look less than attractive. No woman he knew would ever knowingly greet a man at her door dressed like that. The fact that she would look incredibly delectable wearing a damn gunny sack irritated him.

He could smell her recent shower and the scent of her perfume made his head swim. She had simply toweled her hair dry, not bothering to style it, and her face was completely innocent of makeup. A light, delicious scattering of pale freckles invited a man to run his tongue over her skin. He followed her into the kitchen, where the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans made him draw another deep, appreciative breath. Thank God he would have something to do with his hands.

She pulled out a chair for him to sit on and turned to pour the steaming coffee into a stoneware carafe, which she carried to the table and set on the pristine cloth before him. He rose as she came back and she seemed startled that he accorded her the civility of seating her before he sank back into his chair.

Obviously she was unused to any kind of male courtesy. She had actually been astonished by his simple act of holding the fire door for her the previous day. He let his eyes move over her clear skin, over the neatly trimmed and manicured, polish-free nails, and back up to the freshly washed halo of red-gold hair that appeared to be her true color. It made him wonder what the color at the parting of her thighs would be. Her hair was still damp and clung to her cheeks in small wisps as she poured two cups of the fragrant brew, and he noted again that the baggy T-shirt was all she had on her torso—all that covered those sweetly succulent breasts.

She wore no bra. She didn’t seem to be concerned that her nipples were clearly visible through the thin cotton of the T-shirt, nor did she worry about the droplets of coffee that slopped onto the inexpensive linen cloth covering her table as his hand shook slightly. He shoved away the heated thoughts that invaded his mind and wiped the hot drops from his hand with the napkin she handed him.

Why he was so affected by this woman was beyond him. She was certainly no great beauty, yet she seemed to radiate something that tugged at him, even when she was out of his sight. He shook off the feeling of not being in control here. “You had questions about the agreement?” He tried very hard to keep his eyes on her face and not let them wander to her delightful nipples.

She nodded, reaching for the papers. She handed him one, with red circles around things she didn’t understand.

He noted the biggest red circle and pursed his lips. He lifted his eyes to hers and said quietly, “If the contract did not address the possibility of children being born, people would think the marriage was a sham.” And even though he had no intention of consummating his marriage, his cock had its own ideas, straining under cover of the tablecloth.

“Which it is,” she said, nodding. She stirred a spoonful of sugar into her cup and nodded at the rest of the papers. “What about those things there?”

He shrugged, struggling with his body. “Spousal gifts are simply that. If you received anything from me as a gift over the course of the marriage, it would remain yours after the marriage ends.” His eyes slid over her jewelry-free hands. “For instance, the engagement ring I have for you, any clothing or jewelry you receive from me, any property or money I choose to give you. All would remain yours after the marriage ended.”

She swallowed convulsively. “Oh. I hadn’t thought about any of that. I didn’t expect you to give me anything.” She looked distraught.

He stared at her in amazement. A woman who didn’t think about jewelry or clothes? Was she real? Was she alive? He reached into his jacket pocket, drew out a black velvet box and set it on the table beside her cup. Perhaps this would show him her true colors.

“As the wife of a wealthy man, you will be expected to possess decent clothing and jewelry for those times when you must accompany me to functions and receptions,” he murmured. “Open it and see if it fits. I may need to have it sized.” He watched her face casually and realized he was holding his breath.

She stared at the box as if it were a bug, which totally irritated him for some inexplicable reason, and when she finally got up the nerve to reach for it she did so gingerly, as if it might bite at any moment.

As she opened the box, her mouth dropped open and her eyes grew large. “Oh my God. I can’t take that!” Her voice was hoarse. “It must have cost a small fortune!” She shook her head quickly and shoved the box back across the table toward him. “I wouldn’t dare wear something like that. Someone might cut off my hand to get it.”

He raised his brows as he lifted the ring from the box. He turned the ring under the light and a starburst of fire from thirty-two glittering white diamonds surrounding what was most likely the largest square-cut emerald she had ever seen nearly blinded her. “You don’t like emeralds?” he asked, lifting his eyes to her face.

“I love them—I mean—sure, I like them. But not one that big! It could be a frigging paperweight!” Her eyes were huge. “I don’t wear jewelry—at least, not that kind of jewelry,” she protested weakly as he reached across to lift her left hand and slide the exquisite ring onto her finger.

He noted that it was a good fit and he felt the trembling of her hand as she tried to pull it from his. He released her fingers slowly and watched her as she stared at the ring. In spite of her protests he sensed that she liked the ring very much.

Heating Up The Pages With Nina Pierce And The Gemstone Collection

My guest today is bestselling author and lovely person Nina Pierce. Nina's heroine's are the smart girls and her descriptions are stunning. If you haven't read one of Nina's books the Gemstone Collection is a great introduction to her and a lot of other terrific authors as well.

Heating up the Pages
Guest Blog by Nina Pierce

“Wow, Nina you’re a writer? What do you write?”
“Romance.”
“I love romance. Boy meets girl. Girl plays hard to get. Sunset moment when everyone finds true love.” *sigh* “I’d like to read yours.”
“Just a caveat…most of mine are spicy romances.”
“Of course they are. All romances are a little naughty.”
“Weeellll, it’s more than a little. Mine are true romances with the bedroom door wide open. There is no fade to black when it comes to the sex scenes.”
Heavy pause. Whispered response, “Erotica? Why didn’t you say in the first place? What’s your website addie?”

I can’t tell you that’s how all the conversations go when I reunite with old friends and tell them about my new career. But it amazes me how many women of all ages are enjoying erotic romance. This genre that began in the back rooms of small internet publishing companies a decade ago has exploded in the digital age and has now gone mainstream with Berkley, Harlequin, and Kensington, just a few of the NY publishing companies that are jumping into bed with this genre. And then of course there’s that explosive NY Times and USA Today self-published bestseller that was found on the nightstand of many former conservative romance readers.

But what’s the allure? What fascinates women enough to seek out erotic romance books?

Well, for one it’s the quality of the storyline and the writing. Erotic romance is not pornography. Let me repeat that lest you become confused. Erotic romance isn’t about writing a story around one gratuitous sex scene after another (that’s pornography). In erotic romance, the characters’ love story—as in all romances—is the primary push of the plot. The conflict of emotion and the tension between the central characters is high even if the relationship is consummated. It’s the journey of the characters to find, if not their happily-ever-after, at least their happy-for-now ending. The plot may be central to the character’s sexual awareness, but having lots of sex is not what’s driving the main characters.

Also, the length of erotic romances varies immensely. Harlequin’s Spice Briefs and EC’s Naughty Nooners can be as short as 5,000 words and all publishers accept erotic romance stories up to a full novel length of 90k and everything in between. This means there is something for every reader from the “quickie” to the satisfying “take-it-slow-lounge-in-bed-for-the-whole-weekend” story.

Secondly, I think women are more in touch with their own sexuality. We know what we like and what gets our engines revving and we’re not ashamed to seek it out. Our fantasy lives are as diverse as the authors and their stories. Want a vampire to seduce you? That’s out there. How about a little public sex? Oh, yeah available by the truckload. A little seduction with leather bindings and a ball gag? Bondage/Dominance/Submission/Masochism (BDSM) is one of the highest grossing erotic romance genres these days. And of course the fantasy of multiple men intently focused on satisfying one female is growing exponentially. (That’s my personal favorite—both to read and to write.)

So what is it about erotic romance that draws you or makes you shy away? What component keeps you coming back to the genre as an author and/or a reader?

I am so pleased to have my sexy sci-fi menage, “A Touch of Lilly” included in the WHAT TO READ AFTER FSOG (Fifty Shades of Grey) Boxed Set #2! This set contains 11 sexy stories from 11 amazing authors and it’s ON SALE for a limited time for $0.99!

Blurb for TOUCH OF LILLY:
Ex-Chicago detective LILLY D’ANGELO has a secret she doesn’t share with anyone. A master of the one night stand, she’s given up ever finding a soul mate and thrown herself head first into her career. That is, until she captures the wrong alien. Kidnapped and sold into the sex slave trade, she’s shipped into deep space. Barely escaping with her life, Lilly now travels the galaxy working as a bounty hunter using her secret talents to bring down criminals and seeking revenge on the one male who ruined her life.

Agent DALLAS SAWYER works for deep space’s version of the FBI. After a disastrous mission that left several of his team members murdered, a president executed, and Dallas near death, he’s determined to take down the assassin targeting government officials. When a sexy human female gets between him and his goal, Dallas and his alien partner find themselves on the receiving end of a passionate night they won’t soon forget and a proposition that may very well blow up in their faces.

Because in deep space … true love can happen with just a touch.

EXCERPT:
Lilly D’Angelo wasn’t expecting a trip down memory lane when she sauntered into the dingy tavern, but the acrid stench and gruff hum of the Friday night crowd carried her back to one of the seedier establishments on Chicago’s south side nonetheless. Except for the clientele, the owner had managed to replicate nearly every detail right down to the blue haze of cigarette smoke and the soft crooning of a jazz band on the corner stage.

Pushing the sour thoughts of home from her mind and focusing on the job at hand, Lilly morphed her features into her sexiest vixen pout and moved gracefully toward the long bar on the other side of the room. Her voluptuous breasts, spilling temptingly from her silk blouse, led the way. The eyes watching her leather-clad ass sashay around the battered tables were clustered on various life forms—none of them human.

Yeah, definitely not Chicago. Hell, this wasn’t even Earth for goodness sake.

“Regent’s ale, straight up, hold the brenic.” Lilly ordered the local brew in English, hoping the two-headed alien behind the bar had a cochlear translator in one of those eight holes that passed for ears. Satisfied when one head nodded, she settled on a stool, making sure her fur jacket and blouse parted just enough to offer a seductive view of her cleavage. She shifted, allowing the black leather skirt to ride up her thigh and expose a little more silky real estate. The reflection she saw in the mirror behind the liquor bottles was every inch a working woman on the prowl. She wasn’t trying to attract anyone in particular, just hoping to mislead the locals into thinking she was some female making a living with her body—which was true—just not as the human streetwalker she impersonated.

Undercover work was what kept food in her belly and a roof over her head. But it was the cold-hearted need for revenge that had driven her to flaunt her feminine wares on distant planets. Walking among low-life criminals—most of them of the non-human variety—was a small price to pay for the opportunity to avenge the calamity that had become her life.

Lilly wasn’t a xenophobic bigot by any stretch of the imagination. It’s just that six months in deep space, working as a bounty hunter in these kinds of joints, wasn’t really long enough to become accustomed to the scenery. The Nebulae Galaxy’s spaceports overflowed with aliens of all sizes and genders; from two-headed Xericks, like the bartender, to the gangly-limbed Znedus and oversized Ka’al with their mahogany skin and flat noses. The twelve planets of this galaxy had become a melting pot of sorts for all types of aliens.

Only that wasn’t really a fair term here in deep space.

Alien inferred the life forms didn’t belong. On the contrary, it was humans who were invading their territory. The treaties of 2253, signed well over forty years ago, had guaranteed the safe travel of humans in deep space. After the snafu of ‘34, which saw the first major battle over territories since light travel had been discovered, humans had insisted on protection for their species. They’d formed some bullshit board of security, guaranteeing humans could run roughshod over the universe like everywhere else. Though they were technically called Q’orstan Aerlheit Lunivarsium, most people referred to them as QAL. Lilly nicknamed them the alphabet mafia. At one point in time, she’d actually considered working for them. Then they’d discovered who she was—or more specifically what she was—and she’d had to detour from that career path. It didn’t matter. They could all go take a flying leap into the lava pits of Beta Mrenn for all she cared. Just because they didn’t appreciate her gift, didn’t mean Lilly couldn’t use her talents to bring down the bad guys.

Of course in deep space, bad was a relative term.

There was the kind of bad that got a person lost on the polar ice caps of Dallas Eight without a backup plan. Or the bad that forced someone to stow away in the engine room of a Drikspa alien tanker bound for unknown destinations, praying not to get caught. Or the bad that got a human female imprisoned as a sex slave on the mining colonies of Krystallos Three, hidden from even the long arm of the QAL. Lilly shivered at that one. Even her talents wouldn’t free her from that kind of torture.

Friday, suit up for BURNING FOR NERO, Cerise DeLand's Navy #SEAL in SEALs GOING HOT!

Loved writing this novella about a SEAL who has the hots for his best buddy's widow. Also loved writing about Annapolis, my old stomping grounds and the midshipmen of the Naval Academy.

What is BURNING FOR NERO about?
On leave due to an injury, Navy SEAL Tony Nero heads home for a little R&R and some Fourth of July fun. When his buddy’s widow Cass Phillips picks him up at the air station, Tony figures he’s in for a sexually frustrating few days. He’s had the hots for the blonde siren for years, but his best friend won her heart first. Even though Ray’s been gone more than a year, Tony bets Cass isn’t interested in any man. Not him. And especially not another SEAL.

Cass has a bone to pick with longtime friend, Tony. After her husband died, he was the closest thing her little boy had to a father figure. His visits stopped abruptly and her son doesn't understand why. Neither does she. She's also unable to quench her growing need for the tough and tender man. She's already loved and lost one SEAL, but that doesn't stop her from burning for Nero.
Read all the great books in this never-ending series!

Stuff and nonsense...

This is one of the funniest power plays ever...

Sometimes you gotta roll with it and bite the bullet. Backing down is not always a sign of cowardice...often, it's a sign of intelligence. And in the case of that British aircraft carrier, bravado isn't an option.

Have you ever found yourself backed into a corner, with no visible way out?  There are times when it's wisest to simply say "Okay...you win..." to the world, and look for another way around the problem.  I've been there a few times, and I find that backing off and taking another shot from a better angle is the only way to survive.  Whether it's a wip that just doesn't work, or something in life that just refuses to happen properly, butting my head against the brick wall isn't working.

I have been working on two wips for over a month, and I'm about ready to scream.  Neither of them is moving the way I want them to. But I have my devious ways of getting around the problem...I read. And read. And read.

And then I go back and attack the wip again.

How do you deal with it when nothing seems to work?

Hugs,

Fran Lee

Important Amazon Changes

Please pass along the following information!
If readers can't find our books they can't buy our books!

Amazon is testing new search behavior.
Instead of showing select mature items in website searches by default, they are hidden by default. If searching in 'All Departments', select mature items do not display. If searching in 'Books' or 'Kindle', in the upper left corner of the display screen it may say "Excluding adult items" and have a "Show all results" link that customers have to click on to see the hidden books. Both of these are in small font and easily missed if you don't know to look for them.
This is not yet effecting all users but it will!!

Winston Graham The Poldark Novels of Cornwall

This week I’m doing something I don’t get to do often enough, which is promote a wonderful author who doesn’t need my help and who is already dead.

I have recently discovered the works of Winston Graham. Born in 1908 he was one of the most successful British authors of our time. He wrote forty novels that have been translated into numerous languages. The Poldark series is beloved by the world and yet I just found out about it.

Graham’s wonderful “Poldark” novels are about rural life in Cornwall beginning in 1783 and spanning several generations. His writing style grabbed me from the first pages and held me riveted. Right now, I’m reading the first of the twelve Cornwall novels “Ross Poldark”, published in 1945.

This is the blurb:
Ross Poldark returns to Cornwall from war, looking forward to a joyful homecoming with his family and his beloved Elizabeth. But instead he discovers that his father has died, his home is overrun by livestock and drunken servants, and Elizabeth, having believed Ross dead, is now engaged to his cousin. Ross must start over, building a completely new path for his life, one that takes him in exciting and unexpected directions…
Thus begins an intricately plotted story spanning loves, lives, and generations. The Poldark series is the masterwork of Winston Graham, who evoked the period and people like only he could, and created a world of rich and poor, loss and love, that readers will not soon forget.

Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Ross-Poldark-Novel-Cornwall-1783-1787/dp/1402225091/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1401848275&sr=1-1&keywords=winston+graham+poldark+series

There are several interesting things to point out about the Poldark series that only other authors and avid readers would appreciate.

First, Graham was only in his mid-thirties when the book was written, but it feels as rich and gritty as if an old soul wrote it. The only book I can compare it to is “Wuthering Heights” written by a twenty-four year Emily Bronté.

Second, the style and POV’s shifts are complex but interesting. There is head-hopping and odd shifts in the omniscient POV galore, and it doesn’t hurt the story telling one little bit. It’s not a big issue. I just bring it up because I did so many rounds of edits this spring. I can’t help but think that if Graham were trying to get this treasure published today with certainty he’d take a beating from a contemporary editor. I’ve noticed in current publishing, especially the romance genre, the omniscient POV seems to be a fading thing of the past, which is a pity because it has a nice old-fashioned feel to it that suits the 18th century British sensibilities of the story.

Third, much of the dialogue is written in dialect. Many heavy dialects. There are tin-miners; Gentry class and even a “fluffy” woman with a heavy lisp. Her dialogue is written almost phonetically and it’s fun to read.

Fourth, this book is filled with brief, vivid descriptions, exactly the sort a contemporary editor might request be “cut”, because they are not adding to the plot or action.

The humor is dry but fabulous. Most of the comedy is provided by the many tragedies Ross Poldark’s drunken servants, Prudie and Jud, bring into his life. Ross is a tragic and romantic figure himself, a dashing young captain with a scar on his cheek. Both he and his mare are lame.  His estate is crumbling around him. Fate is treating him unjustly and he seems powerless to complain let alone put his life back on track. It’s so subtle but I found myself hurting for him.

The books are charming but even better is the knowledge that PBS Masterpiece Theater is remaking the wildly popular Poldark series of the 70's starring the dark-eyed, brooding Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark. The series will premier in 2015. I can’t wait. We’ve even been promised a forced seduction. Aidan Turner. Forced seduction. Allow that to soak in. Romance fans what more do you want?!
