I admit it.
Superstition is my middle name. Yes. Julia Rachel Superstition Barrett. I won't walk under a ladder. I toss extra salt over my left shoulder. I knock wood. God forbid my husband should say something nice about the car because the minute he says, "Man, this car sure is running well..." Bam! The thing will throw a rod at 75mph on the freeway...in the mountains...at night...when it's 20 below. Been there, done that. Don't want to attract the evil eye!
My left sock goes on first and then my right sock. Then my left shoe and then my right shoe. If I'm tired or out of sorts and I accidentally put on the right shoe first, off it comes and on goes the left shoe. It just feels wrong. Obsessive/Compulsive much? Me?
On the other hand, black cats? No worries. The original warning about black cats - two of which live with me by the way, came from the days when certain groups of people thought cats to be familiars of witches or the devil and it was gray cats, not black cats.
Friday the 13th? Never bothers me. I was born on a Friday the 13th at five minutes to midnight and the obstetrician told my mother that if she was superstitious he'd write it on the birth certificate as five minutes after midnight - on the 14th. She said, nah. The 13th will always be good luck. So far so good. No one knows the true origins of the unlucky reputation of the number 13, but I suspect it has to do with a more pagan tradition of 13 lunar cycles during the year as opposed to the 12 months of the solar calendar.
What about you? You have a lucky day or number or charm?

I never walk under ladders because I know things get dropped. Just what I need...a can of red paint landing on my head. I am OC all the way. Never stepped on a crack. Had to lead with my left foot no matter what. LOL! We all have our foibles and mine have nothing to do with superstitions. Just OCD!
ReplyDeleteI love the number 13! My husband and I chose the 13th as our wedding day. The superstition about Friday the 13th dates back to the days of King Philip IV of France. King Philip was deeply in debt to the Knights Templar-who were the only international bankers and corporation in the world at the time. Philip ordered the Templars be arrested on a Friday, October 13,1307. He tortured and burned the Templars believing they would turn over their treasure. They didn't. Philip died later that year still deeply in debt. The surviving Templars went underground and are believed to have inspired the modern Swiss Banking system. I'm actually writing about now so it was very stupid of me to post this! lol Oh well.... I don't need to burned at the stake to tell my secrets!
ReplyDeleteXXOO Kat
I don't fear the 13th! In fact I find it a lucky day. I won't step on cracks, walk under a ladder and I knock on wood all the time. lol
ReplyDeleteI'm part of the superstitious. :)
I don't know if it counts as a superstition but I'm a freak about saying "God Bless You" when someone sneezes. I get some really weird looks from stangers in stores when I say it to them and if I'm alone, I whisper it to myself!
ReplyDeleteKat, yes that's one explanation and certainly the most dramatic, however, I believe the number 13 was already suspect, thanks to the Roman Catholic Church and its opposition to certain pagan beliefs. Yup, nasty old Phillip did strike on Friday the 13th and he stole the wealth of the order. Wonder what else he was looking for and I wonder what the Knights actually found during their excavations beneath the Temple Mount in Jerusalem??? Perhaps you'll tell us?
