I live in a house that is storage space challenged and I am an avid re-reader; bad combination!
Bookshelves struggle to hold the weight, as over-stuffed boxes clutter up tiny closets. Two stacks of books, new reads and old favorites, teeter on my bedside table. Now, don’t get me wrong, not every book is a keeper. Many go back to the used book store. With the amount of reading I do, this is necessary unless I want to pay for a storage unit!
My newest problem is e-books. I know it wouldn’t be safe for me to lounge in bed with my lap top. Almost every night, I fall asleep reading and I’d be really pissed if my computer dropped onto the floor as the books do when I drift off! So what do I do? If I order a book by a favorite author, I automatically print it. If it is from a new to me author, I read it first, sitting upright at my computer, and then decide if it’s print worthy. The piles of 8 x10 sheets of paper are beginning to take over! At first, I was using binder clips, but then, helpful hubby bought a whole bunch of plastic report covers, which work very well for the shorter books but not the longer ones. He suggested getting hard binders, but that makes them bulky and hard for me to hold.
I can hear you asking, “Why doesn’t the ninny buy an e-reader?” Well, there are a few reasons. I’m freakishly frugal (I almost typed cheap), technology challenged and stubborn! Being the head of the family’s budget department, I can’t justify buying something that only benefits me. And, there’s a strong possibility I’d buy the wrong one, or not be able to figure out how to use it properly, or God forbid, the little devil would crash and I would lose everything on it. And finally, I’m used to holding the printed pages in my hands. See, now we’ve arrived at just plain stubborn!
Would anyone like to help guide me further into the 21st century? What’s your e-reader of choice and why?
My e-reader of choice is my computer monitor with a pdf file. I never print e-books because I usually end up with thousands of pages and it's worse than buying paperback books.LOL!
ReplyDeleteI create a file on a flash drive where I store all 498 e-books I have purchased, and the flash drive clicks right into any USB port on any computer. With pdf files, you shove a huge amount of books into a tiny little space. I am totally CHEAP! I would not pay even the $89 for the cheapest e-reader. I can get a whole new flat screen monitor for that amount.
An e-reader is on my wish list! I really really want one but can't afford it just now...I've entered a couple of e-reader giveaways and hoping I'll be able to win one. If you like you're more than welcome to enter these contests...What could it hurt? You just might win one :)

I wish you lots of luck.
Happy Reading

I wish I could help you, but I'm with Fran. I read it at my computer. I used to print them out, but that can add up too.
ReplyDeleteSanta offered to bring me an e-reader this year. I've shopped around and tried Sony's, Kindles and read about Nooks and I can't commit to a single one! In my opinion they all have flaws. I hear that Apple is coming out with one in the spring that will blow the others away with full color screens that will make down loading magazines and video a breeze. Our family is hard core Mac lovers so I may ask Santa to save up his money for another day and get what I really want down the road.
ReplyDeleteOn a personal note Tessie-forget about frugal for a moment and think about quality of life. Think of the mental-space for new things that could come into your life. Think of the cumulative cost both in dollars and environmentally of all the paper and ink cartridges needed to print a couple of books. It adds up fast. Think of the clutter and dust that accumulates in those paper backs as they degrade. My friend is a book hound. She had hundreds of books piled beside her bed and developed terrible breathing problems. She moved the books-problem gone! It was the masses of dusty degrading paper that was hurting her but intellectually she feared giving up what was in those books so she fought it. Maybe we'll all pitch in this Christmas and her the e-reader! lol

Bought hubby an e-reader for Christmas. Don't tell him! My house is filled to the rafters with books. My sister's house is filled with books. My parents' house is filled with books, my grandmother's house was filled to bursting with books. My son's house has books coming out of the windows...guess we all like to read!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much everyone for your comments, insights and contest links!! I greatly appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteI'm saving all my printed books. We'll need something to do in 2012 if we are sent into the ice age predicted in
ReplyDeleteThe Day After Tomorrow.
